Don't sleep on Saints tight end Benjamin Watson: Larry Holder's OTA observations

Josh Hill received almost all of the hype as the New Orleans Saints' next big thing at tight end with the trading of Jimmy Graham to Seattle.

Don't sleep on Benjamin Watson, though, at least after the third day of organized team activities.

Watson made a couple of Graham-esque receptions during Thursday's session, drawing the praise of Drew Brees.

The 34-year-old tight end's first catch occurred in team drills when he ran a seam route and hauled in a deep pass in traffic. This was more along the lines of a good throw by Brees and a nice grab by Watson.

The second noticeable reception occurred on what look like busted coverage, which drew the ire of secondary coach Wesley McGriff. Watson ran a deep post from the inside and drifted uncovered past linebacker Ramon Humber. Watson snagged the pass from Brees for what would have been about a 70-yard touchdown reception.

Here are a few more observations from Thursday's OTA session:

Rookie linebacker Stephone Anthony ran with the second-team defense at the Mike (middle) spot during all of practice, predictably, with David Hawthorne lining up with the starters. Still, the Saints' second first-round pick came up with the most notable defensive play of the session.

Luke McCown pump faked to his right and then fired a pass to the left side during team drills. Anthony didn't fall for the fake, remaining in his area to correctly read the play and intercept the ball.

Anthony is known for his coverage skills, and the Saints certainly hope this will be one of many pass disruptions this season and beyond. ...

Veteran edge defender Anthony Spencer played ahead of Junior Galette during much of the base defense snaps during team drills.

The Saints were running more 4-3 scheme looks Thursday and maybe that's why Galette rotated in rather than played the majority of the snaps. The thought going into this season is that Galette would be more of a pass-rush specialist.

This could mean something or this could mean nothing. But it's noteworthy.

Cam Jordan and Akiem Hicks lined up as the ends, while Lawrence Virgil and John Jenkins were the defensive tackles. Brodrick Bunkley (quad) still isn't practicing as the team eases him back into the lineup.

Jairus Byrd participated in the entire practice, which is a good sign coming off his knee injury early last season. Kyle Wilson saw just about every snap at nickel cornerback with the first team. Stanley Jean-Baptiste and Terrence Frederick were the base corners with the second team. ...

Overall, there was more to like from the Saints' offense during Thursday's session.

Young receivers Seantavius Jones and Brandon Coleman each picked up receptions during first-team drills. Brees described the two second-year players, each fighting for more playing, as "night and day better" than they were a year ago.

Rookie tight end Harold Spears came up with a good catch on a similar route Watson ran in one of his two noticeable plays. Rookie wideout R.J. Harris also came up with a reception from Ryan Griffin during team drills. ...

Zach Hocker won the day in the kicking competition. He hit on all four field-goal attempts. Dustin Hopkins missed his final try, going 3-of-4.

Michael Brewster played center with the first-team offense with Max Unger (birth of a child) missing practice. C.J. Spiller was the first tailback in the rotation with Mark Ingram (foot/ankle) missing practice.

The punt returner rotation Thursday was Brandin Cooks, Spiller, Jalen Saunders, Marcus Murphy.

Every time I read these, I get the impression that we're about to field the greatest football team in human history.

Someone on this board keeps saying Watson will likely double his catches just based on the math and the amount of increased targets he will get.

That someone also catches a lot of shite from other posters about this "bold" prediction of 40 catches for him. I mean it's just 40 fricking catches. Not like the someone is predicting he's going for 80.

Watson is 34. I'm gonna sleep on him. I'm good with him splitting time with Josh Hill and whichever random TE makes the team.

Ingram being his typical injury prone self. Probably on the sidelines enjoying him some snowballs or something.

Watson hasn't exactly lit the world on fire here. Being a year older it's hard to get hyped he'll do great things. I don't get why people on this board are high on Hill either...all I saw from him last year was inability to make easy catches. Going to be a massive loss in production there with Graham gone no matter how you slice it.

Ummm........what? He was only targeted 20 times last year, 2 of those were passes Drew threw over his head out of reach in the end zone on purpose because he was double covered. So out of the 18 passes actually to him, he caught 15 of them. He actually only had 1 dropped pass last year.

No its really not, most of the people that think this dont even look at what Graham actually did last year. Jimmy only had one game last year where he had over 100 yards. In fact 8 of the 15 games he played in he had less than 60 yards a game. He also had 17 dropped passes last year. So maybe it was Graham dropping easy catches not Josh Hill.

Nice! Some receivers will have to step up this year. I'm confident in Colston and Watson, but somebody will have to show the ability to stay healthy and be a consistent receiving threat. I'm hoping it's Coleman just due to his size and speed.

Thanks for the update Meat.
