Cooks Selection Reviews

GM Mickey Loomis trades up and goes after Oregon State speedy wideout Brandin Cooks. Sean Payton and Drew Brees implement so many moving parts to their offensive schemes, Cooks gives them a wideout that can stretch defenses and jet down the field. Cooks' 4.3 speed gives the QB so much room to fit the football into his hands, simply by creating that initial separation. Opposing DC's will have fits trying to figure out where the attack will be coming from. That answer is actually pretty simple: from everywhere.
Grade: A+

New Orleans Saints: Brandin Cooks (20th)
The skinny: Cooks was the best receiver in college football last year and one of the most electric players in the draft. You can certainly understand his addition to the offense. He's a savvy pass catcher who should be able to drop right into the Saints after running similar route concepts at Oregon State.

The Saints selected what many felt was the best receiver on the board at this point. The Biletnikoff Award winner as the nation's top receiver at Oregon State last season, Cooks does not have the size (5-10, 190) of a couple of the more-heralded receivers in this draft. However, he is not wanting for toughness or speed and he is known as a disciplined route runner.
Grade: B+

The risk: The pick isn't a terrible one and Cooks is a good player. But giving up a third-rounder to move up for him is a gamble, especially if you live by the notion that Drew Brees can make any receiver look good.
The reward: Even at his size, Cooks has the ability to become a No. 1 receiver whenever Marques Colston leaves. He's one of the more dynamic players in the draft and is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball.

The Saints moved up from the 27th spot in the first round to the 20th, formerly owned by the Arizona Cardinals, and took Oregon State receiver Brandon Cooks with that selection. With Kenny Stills already developing as a slot receiver, and Jimmy Graham in the fold for at least another year, adding Cooks gives Drew Brees a dynamite deep threat — he’s the kind of player who can open things up for everyone else in the passing game, often at a level that prompts comparisons to DeSean Jackson.

Wideout was a big need for New Orleans; Marques Colston is always banged up, while Lance Moore is gone. Brandin Cooks will take Moore's spot and will be a huge upgrade. It's almost scary to imagine the Saints' offense now with Cooks joining Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham. Sean Payton will have lots of fun with Cooks.

No one mentioning his return ability...Is it out of the question that we put this guy at PR, KR, or both? Would have to think the more you can put the ball in his hands, the better.

I'd say we won't know how good the trade was until we see who's there at #91. Then we have to ask, would we rather have Brandin Cooks, or Marqise Lee and whoever at #91?

He's done it, just not a lot.

They interviewed SP on the Cooks pick and he said they will give cooks a shot at both kick off and punt return and see what happens

This is the guy I wanted. You watch film on Cooks and you can easily see that he is a perfect fit for this offense. The team doesn't have many holes at all, but a legit play-maker was one of them. That has now been covered. There's been plenty of good comparisons to Cooks; Steve Smith, Antonio Brown, and the one I see the most in him, a healthy Percy Harvin. This is easily the most stacked Saints team I've seen, and are a good number 2 CB and C away from being dominant. We don't know how this will all play out until the season actually gets going, but this is setting up for a special year, and I bet that Cooks will play a big role in it.

This guy is an idiot. 5'10" never replaces 6'4". Plus today's game there is no more #1 or #2 WR. Each play is a game of matchups and it all depends on that. Still, it is imperative to have that big WR with speed to be your dominant controller on the field along with the speedster. Cooks is the latter, and once Colston is gone we must get the former.

I love the Cobb comparison over DJax. DJax is pure straight line speed and out runs everyone.
Cooks can do that, but has more wiggle in his game than DJax does, like Cobb.
Blend of both really. Faster than Cobb, and more shake than DJax. Gonna be a stud.
Ill give it as high a B+ as you can get, just because we gave up a 3rd. And it doesnt really bother me that we traded up to get the WR we wanted. And i think that the Eagles or Chiefs would have taken him, so we had to jump them. Thats literally the only thing that keeps this from being an A+ in my book. And it doesnt really bother me that much anyways. Went up and got our guy. Love it.

He was just saying that Cooks, even though hes undersized, can be a #1WR in the NFL. A lot of undersized WRs are usually #2 or slot WRs.
Cooks is the complete package at WR and can be a teams #1.

Randall Cobb Highlights
I'm just saying. Same build. Same characteristics. Same game. I doubt the Saints will use him out of the backfield, but who knows?
The way GB reacted when the Saints took Cooks, then that's what they were shooting for. Another Cobb on the field, IMO.

No one we get at 91 + Lee will equal Cooks.

gotta confess I was scared as shite about Lee. Donte "Hammy" Stallworth put a perpetual leeriness in me about the super athletic track type stars. What I love is how Payton gushed about his toughness. He catches with his hands a whole lot more than Lee. Actually reminds me of Jarvis Landry in that way
