it's reasonable to believe that they have been discussing this since the Cooks trade talks started. I felt like there was more to come after it.

Pats work out a sign and trade, Saints offer a 2nd seems like a good deal for both

So then the total splits between the two teams would be:

Cooks + 2nd + 4th

For

Butler + #32 + 3rd

I'd love to send Anthony and a 3rd and call it a day.

than the Texans(a likely playoff team) 2nd rounder in 2018.

The Texans don't have a 2nd rounder in 2018. They gave it up in the Brock trade.

They do have one this year, though.

Breer stalking shite too...

As for New England/New Orleans arranging a trade -- Pats would likely get a 3rd-rd comp for Butler. So it'll cost the Saints more than that.

like it doesn't matter who else they sign or don't sign that year.

Seems odd that Houston is willing to do this given they just let their corner walk

But I guess that was before the trade

No one in our front office would be able to explain it to you. I think we've gotten the least number of compensatory picks in the league.

There isn't a whole bunch of it there.

Chad makes a fine point above.

Ah. We would have the upper hand in that scenario as well. Ours is #42...Houston has #57.

A 3rd round pick this year is worth more than a 3rd round comp pick next year

Outside of this year, pats are not big time Free Agent spenders, and would likely not find a FA to offset a splash free agent like butler would be for another team. Plus they still have the cap flexibility next season to franchise tag him if they want

wouldn't even be next year, would be 2019 in that hypothetical situation.

That would only happen if we signed him to an offer sheet, rather than trading for him, right? Which in that case, we would have already given them #11. If correct, that would be like saying "the Patriots would get #11 + a 3rd round comp, so it'll cost the Saints more than that." Although I think it'll cost at least a 2nd, that isn't really a fair comparison, if my first sentence is correct.

Edit: I see now he's referring to Butler playing this year on the RFA tag (which won't happen), and then hitting FA next. Yeah, like others said Our 2017 3rd>2019 comp 3rd.

This, and they literally just signed Gilmore. So, maybe not comp at all. Breer can suck it.

THIS! I see all these teams that get them every year, and it just makes me

Patriots have never had that mindset. They love trading down and gaining future draft picks. Saints should know that very well (2008)

That's partly because we've struck out in FA and drafted poorly

It wouldn't even be next year, if I'm following him correctly. It would be 2019.

If I'm getting his point, the Pats COULD get a 3rd round compensatory pick if he signs his tender with the Pats, plays the season, and they lose him to FA in 2018.

In that scenario, assuming they don't make corresponding deals, the COULD get a 3rd Rd compensatory in 2019 (compensatories are based on the previous offseasons moves, not the current offseason)

Easily. That comp pick is at the very end of the round.
