The argument for(and against) Carmelo

MM posted a 3000 word piece about it
Bullet points:
Basically what tyreke's ceiling is offensively but much higher.
He and AD would be the most clutch duo. Melo shot 48% in clutch situations over the last decade versus 29% for everyone else.
AD/Melo P&R is an utter nightmare for opposing Ds. May not be a better running mate than a healthy melo for AD
Can play Melo at 3 or at 4 and lose nothing in the latter(he's actually better as a 4 see team USA). Melo at PF and AD at C in late games would be fap worthy.
Lot of comparisons to paul pierce circa 2006/2007
Has the talent to be a wonderful player in gentry's system but needs to change his game/mindset a bit.

Verdict
So, should the Pelicans Pursue Carmelo Anthony?
Yes.
I know I will be in the minority on this one, as the NBA seems to be heading more towards team basketball and ball movement, but at the end of the day, stars win in this league. The Hawks were a great story, but the second they matched up with a star, they got demolished. The Warriors were fantastic all year, but they were down 2-1 because Lebron was carrying his team the way a star should, and Golden State only turned it around after Stephen Curry started playing like a star again. It’s a superstar league, plain and simple, and whenever you get the chance to add one, you do it. Especially when you don’t have to give up a star to do it — when, instead, you get to pair him with another superstar.
The question is whether Anthony will be willing to refine his game and take a step back for the good of the team. Honestly, this is an unknown, but Carmelo has to be sick of watching his peers hoist trophies while his team is an afterthought across the NBA. And as I mentioned earlier, he would have to approve a trade anywhere he goes, so you would think that he’d only agree to come to New Orleans to win, and win big.
The Knicks will most likely give it a shot this season, and hope that they can catch lightning in a bottle with Anthony and one or two mid-tier free agent acquisitions. But when the losses rack up yet again, and Anthony starts taking shots at the 19-year-old who management sees as their future, it will be time for him to move on and for New York to enter into a full rebuild. When that happens, a package of expiring contracts and/or Tyreke (who could get sent to a third team for picks), could be the best offer that New York has on the table from a team that Melo would actually give a thumbs up to. At that point, you take the bird in the hand and pair AD with a sure-fire superstar that would instantly turn the Pelicans into championship contenders.

Is this story from 2008? 2006? 2012? He's not changing who he is. He won't want to come to New Orleans. And I seriously doubt he will want to be in a situation where he isn't "the guy".

Argument against: he's a bum.

Argument against: he's a taller, fatter, lazier Allen Iverson.

so, Gordon and Anderson for Carmelo?
if that's the trade, at the deadline, and Carmelo/his agent (wife) agree to it, then yes you do that

He won't want to come to New Orleans.
He'll have 2 years and a player option left on his deal after this upcoming. That's probably enough that he doesn't have much leverage. If he had leverage he could probably make Phil take a bad deal from the Clippers, but he doesn't. That being said, you don't want Melo unless Melo wants you, and I suspect the 2 teams in LA will be at the top of his wishlist.

If there was any way in hell he would be a good teammate and locker room guy, it may be fun to consider it. But otherwise, we don't need the drama. Or the salary, for that matter.

I get his "star" theory but not all Stars are created even remotely close to equal. I think he'd be most effective in a super sub role at this point if he was really serious about winning a title. I just never see the guy as a propelling force to a title unless it's in a complimentary role that he will never accept.

Well his leverage is he has a no trade clause. Given he and his wife's history and past comments. He is not trading it to come here.
He's got a shite attitude, allegedly is tough on coaches, and is a black hole ISO guy.
I mean I guess if it's for expirings sure. I'd take the risk even though I'm not a fan. But it won't be.

Didn't realize that. He's definitely going to LA.

All this insistence on who Carmelo is as a person, what he is willing to do to win, what he is willing to sacrifice as a player, etc - Can anybody direct me to all these links that back up these claims?
I am not saying that he will definitely conform to a system or come to New Orleans or be the greatest teammate, but I don't pretend to know as if it is absolute fact either.
The reason I bring up Pierce so much in this piece is because a lot of the same narratives were surrounding him in 2007. People are so sure they know the personality and wants of a person they never met, and then low an behold, a new opportunity presents itself and I think Pierce is seen in a terrific light now.
I did a lot of research on this piece and went in with an open mind, trying to find good and bad. And so many of these narratives that people spout out like they are just facts are unfounded and/or might not be the case now that he just turned 31 and has got to be tired of losing by now.

what kind of reality show can we get LaLa? That will be the deciding factor

Why do you keep bringing up word count?

Getting Team USA Melo is incredibly appealing and worth it. Catch and shoot/attack Melo is simply devastating.
But I don't know if that Melo exists without an elite perimeter (Bron, Paul, Kobe, Durant, etc) player who both keeps him from dominating the ball and is a guy he respects/trusts. He's got some Kobe in him- which is not a knock. Melo is a spectacular player on offense. But too often he tries to do it on his own.

THIS is what people should say more. I applaud you.
I feel the same way. I don't know. I can imagine Melo humbling himself and playing more in the system now that he finally has another superstar besides him and a real chance to win. Or he can just fight it and try to play iso ball.
I don't know is the right answer. This who claim to know exactly what would happen if he were traded here are the ones I am more leery of.

Do I believe Carmelo is feeling left out of his peer group enough that he'd try to win with AD in New Orleans if that's where he ended up? I do. Do I believe New Orleans will be 1st or even 2nd on his list when he could both please his wife by going to a top TV production market and join other star players in Los Angeles? I don't. I'd put Chicago ahead of the Pelicans too.

And that was one of my points in the piece. IF he says yes to the trade, then we have our answer to his commitment level. If not, then no harm no foul.

There wouldn't be a 2nd option in the league better than Carmelo

Look, this is a message board so we say things as if we KNOW them.
Do I KNOW for a fact what I've said about him. No, I guess not.
But I feel pretty confident that we wouldn't even be in his top 5 should he waive his no trade clause, and other teams have better assets.
