If I'm not mistaken do we have until the end of July to decide if we will stretch him or is the end of August.

I would assume if Dell does this it will be soon after teams are allowed to make trades/ sign free agents so it would give us some more flexibility to actually sign a decent starting guard.

I think trading Asik at this point is impossible and having him under contract the next 2 seasons could have a really negative impact on our ability to bring in another star quality free agent.

You don't stretch him until you need to. Until we get real interest from a serious upgrade, it would be dumb.

Stretching is about the money and years remaining so July or August are pretty much the same thing.

The only reason you stretch Asik is if you have a particular target that requires you to operate under the salary cap. Otherwise you keep him until you need his cap space or roster spot. If they grandfather in contracts like they normally do, he would be a positive trade asset in the 2019 offseason where you could effectively trade $3 million for $18-$19 million.

I'm still not sure how I really feel about signing Jrue, but this thread should be Ex A for all the doubters.

Between the system, the health issues, and the evolution of the league, Asik was always destined to never live up to what Demps gave him. Holiday is a different situation in that the value of 3 and D guys is increasing. They are the new centers in the NBA (group of players that gets overpaid by default). If Holiday was 2-3 inches taller and could play SF full time he'd be a max player with his skill set for sure.

Trading him isn't impossible. In fact, they think a trade is at least as likely as a stretch as we speak today

There are multiple contracts now that are even worse and if Jrue re-signs, he is far more likely to get traded than stretched unless he agrees to a number below what he is owed.

If Jrue doesn't re-sign, stretching Asik is probably a 50/50 proposition at that point

Of all the different options we've kicked around to add another guard I think I like Asik for Wesley Matthews the best. It turns dead money into useful money, adds a 2 way player, is a short term deal, and adds a starter without burning an asset other than cap space that doesn't matter if they operate over the cap.

And why would they do it? Asik is beyond useless.

Yeah Dallas really doesn't need Asik but I agree wes Matthews would be a good get for this team.

Asik is cheaper to stretch if the Mavs want to operate with cap space. They pretty much only have the MLE to make roster additions as it currently stands. No doubt they'd try to trade him for cap space first and they'd have to have a FA better than Matthews lined up, but it's not as crazy as it first sounds.

I still can't believe Dallas went on tilt and upped his salary after he agreed to sign there because he was "loyal" throughout the Deandre Jordan fiasco.

You are wrong. Just ask and we will inform you. No need to spout off ideas you think might be true. Makes everyone dumber and that works better at Pelicans Report

You're thinking of Amnesty in a past CBA.

Stretch is different. You can do that with anyone.

PR has really gone to shite lately. This board is much better for intelligent basketball conversation. It's a shame because PR used to be my favorite sports forum.

I used to visit HornetsReport multiple times a day back when the old crew ran it. Haven't been over there in years though.

To troll and get them all riled up, sure. It is one of my favorite things to do but I gotta do it sparingly so it has the effect I desire

I was heavily involved with HR back in the day with the old crew under a different name.

I faded from PR with the new crew but tried to make a return last offseason and got banned for 6 months for basically calling some of the more retarded (and Honestly, I really think they might be mentally retarded) posters retards.

The thing I realized, if I am being honest-- is that every dumb take someone has over there or the new guy has on this board --- I had them earlier in my life before I was educated by people much smarter than me

But the difference is I was open to the education. They come through with stuff that is just plain incorrect and don't open themselves up to being taught

You come at me correct - with a question or seeking knowledge-- and I am the nicest guy in the world. You know how many THOUSANDS of CBA questions I have answered over the years? Yes, thousands.

I get all pissy when people come at me trying to prove they are smarter than the guy all Pelicans fans know, as if they are gonna take some invisible crown from me if they prove me wrong.

You guys do that...less. Save for an idiot like Shameless Pel or someone like that. I really am a nice guy; just come correct
