Asik wouldn't be a savings to Dallas simply because of the offset provision. A team will sign Matthews to at least the veteran minimum. So that $2M difference will disappear.
You're full of swings and misses in this thread.

For those that are curious the rules regarding stretch set-offs are:
LINK
The minimum salary for an 8 year veteran like Matthews is going to be $2.1 million. So unless a team is going to use an exception or cap space to sign him to something much bigger than that the set-off amount will be negligible. Even if he got paid $3 million that's only a savings of $450k.
Also, regarding the OP, sorry I couldn't find it before when answering his question. You were right about there being a difference between a summer stretch and an in season stretch.
So stretch Asik by the end of August and it's $24 million stretched over 7 years. Wait until September 1st and he's on your cap for this season and the remaining $14 million gets stretched over 5 years. If they can't trade him and need a roster spot stretching him in season still might be the way to go. At that point if Asik wants to and is able to play again, maybe he takes a buyout and you can stretch say $10 million over 5 years instead of $14 million. And if the plan was to operate above the cap waiting to stretch him in season didn't really hurt and in fact helped you stay over the cap and keep other exceptions.
quote:
suppose a fifth-year player is waived with one guaranteed season remaining on his contract for $5 million. If this player signs a $1 million contract with another team for the 2011-12 season, his original team gets to set off $1 million minus $762,195 (the minimum salary for a one-year veteran in 2011-12), divided by two, or $118,902. The team is still responsible for paying $4,881,098 of the original $5 million.

erikgordan is a little loopy- Cuban aint cutting Dirk- but i dont get why the Mavs would be so in need of an extra $2M in cap space this season.
they've got Barnes, Noel, Yogi, Curry + #10 for Dirk retirement tour. they aren't winning more than about 40 games this year. Matthews will be an expiring next summer- what's the rush right now?

The rush is if they got a player they wanted. Even $2 million could matter. That's less money you have to ask Dirk to give up or it's a young guy they get to keep for cheap depth.
I agree with you and don't see who they could go after to put them in that situation, but the Mavs are almost always aggressive in Free Agency.

I have a feeling JJ Redick is a guy they'll go after. I'd consider him an upgrade over Matthews. They'll still need a PG though so maybe Rubio there.

Redick
Barnes
Dirk
Noel
Not bad

To troll and get them all riled up, sure. It is one of my favorite things to do but I gotta do it sparingly so it has the effect I desire

Yeah-- you guys caught on pretty quickly so it made it less fun. Plus, if I am being honest, you actually have 7-8 really smart posters here that make convos kinda enjoyable

I wonder how realistic it would be to just dump Asik + cash on Brooklyn in exchange for just enough filler to keep the Pels over the cap. It's not like Brooklyn is going to do anything with their cap space even if they wanted to.
Posted on 6/4/17 at 3:38 pm to HickfawJim1
Not realistic.
Brooklyn can take bad contracts into that space and get assets in return
Teams aren't in the business of doing other teams favors

I remember the days when everyone here was clamoring how great Asik was and demanding a Ryno for Asik trade.
Look at Houston now, they took our first, Ryno, EG, our virginity and left us with Asik. Those were the days

Lol so you tell the wife I'm going to the "gym" but instead come on Pelicans report?
I guess at times it's like a work out.
But holy shite its been two weeks.
I'd be strangling my internet company.

I would have paid the $405 to have that taken care of though. This, I can't even bribe them to get them out here
