SAS, GS, HOU, OKC, POR, LAL, and DAL all have teams.

Advantages are that with new CBA you can send injured players down to rehab and eventually you'll have a leg up if exclusivity rights are ever activated.

It's also a good way to expand your fanbase.

With that said, I'd like to introduce you to the fictional BILOXI BREAKERS, D-league affiliate of our New Orleans Hornets/Krewe/Brass/Spirit/Knights/Pelicans.

and the home of YOUR Biloxi Breakers....

Yeah. Can NOLA be a trendsetter and not be last for once?

LAL, SA, OKC, DAL, HOU, GS, POR, CLE, NY, BKN all either own a team or have exclusive agreements like AAA-baseball.

The new collective bargainaing agreement also allows injury assignments like baseball. Get in game shape in small towns, not New Orleans Arena.

Good points LePissier - you should post more.

It could also be the Lafayette Lobotomists if you think that would make more geographic/fanbase sense...

Believe it or not but Mobile was one of the inaugural D-League cities around 2000. This was when the NBA owned all the teams, they were all in the Southeast, there were no NBA team affiliations, and no plan for shuffling players up and down.

They were the Mobile Revelers.

Not that I like it, but that's a carnival-themed nickname that I never heard thrown around for the rebrand.

All future NBA refs must go through the D-League as well similar to the ref development system in Major League Baseball.

How bout BR? We are just big and trashy enough to get a D-League team. Bring em to the centroplex.

I like the idea of putting it on the gulf coast...perhaps rotating between Mobile and Biloxi? Expands the team's fanbase as well...

I'm completely down with this. Good idea. Maybe I can find my old N.O. Breakers USFL gear.

Thanks to Portland 2 weeks ago and a couple other teams last year buying up existing teams, 20 NBA teams are scheduled to share only 6 D-League teams next season. (10 of 30 NBA teams have deals/ownership). There are 16 D-League teams. It's about time for D-League expansion but they claim they economy sucks right now and they "want to make sure the existing teams are in the right market".

I remember when Bennett bought the Tulsa 66ers shortly after he moved the Sonics to OKC he paid like $2 million for the team. That was 2008.
