I have created a stat to rate the effectiveness of a players' passes, measured by points created/lost per 100 passes. I created point values for four factors: assists, free throw assists, hockey assists and passing turnovers and combined them to create Passer Rating

All values are per 100 passes, unless otherwise stated. Minimum 500 total passes.

Only 1 player had a negative passer rating: Hassan Whiteside. It is literally always better for him to shoot than to pass.

When you said what they looked at I knew the 3 guards would show well. Here's an article I ran across yesterday. Someone ran a bunch of numbers and found the Pelicans were huge outliers because we get a ton of open shots despite having poor ball movement.

quote:

All of the numbers combined suggest that while New Orleans doesn’t move the ball as much as other teams in total, they make meaningful passes. It appears that the team is able to exploit opposing defenses that are prioritizing defending attacks at the rim (from Evans and Davis most prominently).

More numbers and how he arrived at his conclusion in the link.

So you are telling me we have great passers but our coach cannot figure out how to get the ball moving around? It's amazing and David Wesley has figured it out. When the ball moves around in our offense we look great. When the ball does not move around we stall out and can't score.

Amazing

The crazy thing is Monty constantly points to the selfish play when it happens. I understand Tyreke isn't naturally inclined to involve others, but when we have a few possessions of selfish play in a row he should call a play that requires everyone move and maybe even touch the ball once.

He may be. He needs to be more diligent calling timeouts as soon as it starts. If it means pulling Tyreke for a few possessions, Cole and Gordon both move the ball around well.

Now we need AD back to settle the front court.

Fascinating read. That guy did a podcast (r squared, old hickory high now nylon calculus podcast) last spring when he released his book. Very interesting discussion.

One thing that might also contribute to the high open % is the low volume of 3s. Many here (and apparently Austin Rivers) have discussed how the team seems to only take wide open 3s and that they could, perhaps, stand to let it fly more freely.

What I do notice is Tyreke is in a similar mold to Rondo in terms of passing. They get the assist numbers, but the team ball movement is dead.
