I'm not trying to defend gentry, but cmon. He can be a bad coach, but he's has what, 19 games with a healthy team (10-9 I think I saw on Twitter). Takes longer than that to judge him imo
I think one could rationally call for his head if he fell on his face with a healthy roster. With the way some of these D league guys have stepped in and looked good in the offense, you would think the actually good players would've done ok.
Also, Alvin has had no say on the inherited roster. There's your Demps issue tho
PS if Alvin was fired tom I wouldn't care, he's meh. But he hasn't gotten a fair shake

Are you channeling a year ago?

Define healthy.
He started the season with everyone but Reke and QPon and we were 1-11.
We had a shite ton of injuries last year as well, not as bad as this year, but still bad.
AD missed 14
Jrue missed over 40
Ryno missed over 20
EG missed over 20
We had Cole for 28
We had QPon for 48
Outside of QPon missing the whole season the injuries are pretty even, until recently now that EG/AD/Jrue/Ryno are out. But our record up until they all went out was abysmal. You can easily say it was the same team as last year minus QPon, with Reke's injuries comparing to Jrue's.
He was a shitty hire. i didn't like it then, and i don't like it now, and i want him gone. I could care less about the injuries and giving him more time. He sucks and we look terrible. Monty dealt with retarded injuries every year and managed to do much better.
If i could go back in time and affect this decision, i'd have never fired Monty. We'd be in the 6 spot right now and he'd still have his wife.

Makes sense both ways

That's understating it a bit, but yes we were injured last season. We also werent in year 1 of a new coaching regime and a new offense, though

It's not understating it at all if you want to compare last year before the all star break to this year before the all star break.

That really hurt Boston and Atlanta when they hired a new coach. They both finished slightly better than the year before. Not going to mention Golden State.
The bobcats went from 7 wins, got a new coach, jumped to 21, then jumped to 41 and the playoffs.
Grizz got a new coach and went from 41 wins to 56 wins 3 years ago.
The Bucks went from 31 wins to 38 win they hired Kidd.
OKC is doing just fine with Donovan.
Got any more excuses for Uncle Alroy, who took a 45 win team and made them a 30 win team, while also making a top 3 player in the league last year, and what most thought would be for the next decade, into someone who couldn't even make the all star team this year.

ehhhh there was a thread a week back that said we missed ~100 games last year due to injury.
Gordon, Reke, Qpon and AD (or jrue?) alone account for 197 as of that thread.

yeah, as of 3/27:

In all, 13 players have combined to miss 253 games because of injuries this season, the third most in the league behind the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies
Gentry could be a terrible coach. He could be the best coach for the Pels. How one can determine either based on this season, I don't know.
Personal opinions on the guy is fine based on his past seasons, I guess.

More than a bit. This is from about a week ago

The Pels missed 108 games to injury/illness last season. This season, Davis, Pondexter, Evans and Gordon will combine to miss 197.
So the whole team missed 108 games last year, 4 players alone combining for twice that. And we may be going for the All Time Record.

NBA record for injuries set by Lakers last yr (339). Pelicans on pace for 332. If Cole + Anderson miss ROS, number jumps to 350. #Winners
So the team will lose more than 3 times as many games to injury as last year. That is insane.

I don't get the comps to last year either. This team was floating around .500 until Pondexter came on board and they got a Norris Cole who shot out of his mind for 3 months. There is no one this year who can give the team what Pondexter offers.
I don't know if Gentry is better than Monty or not. Certainly a case to be made they didn't upgrade at all. Not sure how this season is definitive proof of that though.

Gentry hasn't had an opportunity to succeed this year, but there's nothing he's done that makes me hopeful. The guys played hard under Monty and he was good out of timeouts. I'd like to cut bait now but likely he's gone after next year.
Posted on 3/29/16 at 6:47 pm to corndeaux
Demps has chased offense for the past 6 years. Fire Gentry, draft a defensive player not an offensive specialist in Hield, and grab more 2 way players in FA. Offense doesn't win games defense does. I wanted JVG and this is why all of our teams problems are looked to be solved by more offense. Frick this stupid arse "system" and Gentry as a coah he's is absolutely terrible.
Posted on 3/29/16 at 6:55 pm to 504ByrdGang
I'd be worried about a new coach now without a complete overhaul. Outside of AD we're in bad shape.
Posted on 3/29/16 at 7:19 pm to Parallax
According to this, Gentry is doing pretty well after timeouts. Based on my unscientific view, both guys draw up nice ATOs. Both also have issues managing rotations and end of game situations.
If anything, this season should have taught every Pels fan that coaching in the NBA is hard. An upgrade isn't just waiting around the corner to magically save this broken organization.

I was really excited about Gentry, but he's been really disappointing.
I just want someone that has good rotations and gets the guys to play hard. You're right, that's probably a lot harder to find than most realize.

I went back and looked and compared last season up to January 30th to this season up to January 30th.
Here's what I found.
2016 missed games
AD 7
Ryno 2
Jrue 6
Reke 22
EG 6
Asik 5
QPon 46
Cole 17
Dante 0
Total missed games by people that matter: 111
Total missed games by AD/Ryno/Jrue: 15
2015 missed games:
AD 5
Ryno 0
Jrue 10
Reke 1
EG 22
Asik 4
QPon 37 (since we didn't have him and played with Babbit/Salmons, which is no better or worse than Gee)
Cole 47 (didn't have him at that time. We had Rivers playing those minutes. '16 had Ish ballin instead during Cole's time out)
Dante 0
Total missed games: 126
Missed games by AD/Ryno/Jrue: 15
As you can see, almost everything is the same from this year to last year, except EG was hurt last year more and Reke was hurt more this year.
Qpon didn't play this year. He didn't play last year either. whoever played in his place both years sucked.
Cole didn't play last year, Rivers did. Ish played this year, and did well.
Adding their missed time to last year, while not injured simply b/c they weren't on the team is relevant to me b/c who played those minutes wasn't worth a shite anyway
I don't care that BDJ missed time, or Ajinca, or Babbitt or whatever other 10 day contract guy we got hurt, we had the same amount of injuries last year as this year to start the season.
2015 record on 1/30 25-22
2016 record on 1/20 18-28
AD looks worse
Ryno and Jrue look better, but are they really playing much better than they were for the playoff series last year?
EG looks worse
Reke looked terrible the little bit he played
Asik looks useless as usual
Cole looks like he barely belongs in the NBA at times, but was great last year.
Comparing last year up until the end of January to this year is comparing apples to apples and Gentry sucked arse.
The injury excuse is blown out of proportion. WHo cares that AD is done for the season? you think if we were in teh playoff hunt he woudn't be playing? Who cares if our D-league player missed 40 games. We had a good core of players to start the season and we started 1-11, with basically the same team we started with last year.
Posted on 3/30/16 at 4:11 pm to TeddyPadillac
quote:The frick? Ryno was horrible outside of one game. Jrue was definitely not 100% in the playoffs and was pretty mediocre.

EG last year was a fluke. Outside of last season he has shot about 38% from 3 every year.
The only difference between last season Reke and this year's Reke is 1 point. Assists, rebounds, turnovers, and steals are all the same.
Cole has been below average his whole career, and in no way was he ''great'' last season.
