RT @ESPNSteinLine: ESPN sources say the New Orleans Pelicans have chosen Alvin Gentry as their new head coach

Ugh its the Steele (LSU DC) hire all over again. I am not excited about it, but I am willing to give him a chance. If he can turn our offense into anything like Golden State it will be awesome. I hope he brings in a good coach to coach defense. It can't be any worse than monty.

Geaux Pelicans!

OMG the sky is falling...love the reactions on this board about things.

I mean really, some of these comments..

I am excited about the prospect of a wide open offense and AD turning into a better version of Amare when he was with the Suns.

"I'm extremely happy for Alvin and wish him the best of luck in this new challenge," Kerr said in a statement. "He's had a tremendous impact on the success of our team this season and, personally, has been instrumental in my development as a coach. His experience as a head coach in the NBA has been invaluable during my first season and will, likewise, serve the Pelicans well as they move forward."

the biggest difference in the steele hire is that LSU is a premier, super elite program. the pelicans are not (and i doubt they ever get there)

we have to temper expectations as a fanbase and be realistic given the issues with this team and the city it plays in. even if you don't, the criticism is irrational. JVG and Thibs have not proven to be title-winning coaches in much better opportunities (franchise, city, etc). there was not this golden option available to this franchise.

just because we didn't hire pops (and get dunan, ginobili, and parker with him) doesn't mean gentry isn't an improvement over monty.

Lots of different ways this could break, it will be interesting to see how the team reacts next season on the court.

Gentry at age Sixty is a question mark as well. Some folks run out of gas around that age and the energy level needed to be an effective NBA coach is huge. Just the regular season is a marathon.

I'm not particularly a Demps fan but we shall see how this breaks. With AD set to become (by many accounts) the best player in the NBA over the next ten years (barring injury), there's a lot at stake in this hire.

I still rather JVG or Thibs, however I am not as upset about it as I was last night. Did some thinking while I couldn't sleep last night and AD, Gordon, Cunningham, Pondexter, and Jrue can be a solid lineup if Cunningham can add some size and be our 4

With Asik, Withey, or Ajinca coming off the bench to bring AD at the 4... around the 4 minute mark of first quarter

I am assuming we sign everyone back and give Anderson 10-15 minutes a game early in the season and see if he can shoot himself to more minutes

With this lineup we be able to switch on every screen, just like the Warriors did because they had 5 athletes on the floor

The retards on this board not liking this hire tells me all I need to know about this

Fantastic hire

For some reason you people thought JVG was Phil Jackson version 2.0 or some shite. Cause he's cute on TV I guess?

Despite the fact he underachieved in Houston and hasn't coached in a decade

I will never understand the boner yall had for JVG. Never.

Good for him

Gentry ain't gonna set the world on fire. I never expected us to make a hire that would.

But he's better than Jeff Van fricking Gundy

I'm not so sure. I don't follow it close enough to know for sure, but my feeling is Thibodaux would not have been a good fit. We don't need some sour a-hole. Van Gundy? Hasn't been an active coach in several yrs. What the Pels really needed was a guy who will coach up tempo offense. That plays to the young roster's strength. Maybe that got that w/ Gentry.

Interesting comparison, came to my mind as well. But for the average fan, you want a "name" hire ... how much do you really know about the coach? During the LSU DC hiring process I kept hearing about Clancy Pendergast and I was convinced we had to have him ... but quite honestly, before the coaching search I had never heard of him. I know Gentry has had other head coaching stops... certainly he's done well at GS, albeit as an asst.

I'm at the acceptance stage. I know the offense will be exactly what I want. I was complaining about Monty's offense all year and wanted to run what Gentry runs. So that will make me happy. It will be exciting.

The rest of the stuff worries me. But we shall see.

bet Stephen A. Smith wasn't happy to see this hire. I'm sure he had prepared a tirade about not enough black coaches in the NBA

So Calipari did actually have a convo with Demps..

John Calipari had a brief conversation with Demps, but the terms of any potential hire were quashed by the salary he needed to leave Kentucky, combined with his lack of experience and success at the NBA level.
