NBA Trade Rumor: Melo to Celtics "Becoming More Likely" (Pels Direction Spin)

LINK LINK
There has been rumblings about this for a couple of weeks. Cavs, Clippers, Bulls, and Thunder have also been rumored to be interested in Melo. That's a whole story in itself but I bring it up for the Pelicans because a trade like this, if and when it goes down, will speed up the timeline for the Pelicans to start making decisions about the direction of the franchise.
At that time, the Pels have to know: what's the goal this offseason and beyond, and how are they going to get there?
Just as an example, one writer for the Clippers suggested trading Omer Asik to LA for Jamal Crawford so the Clippers free up salary to go after Melo. LINK. Which idk about you but I would jump on in a heartbeat. It gives us a player we can actually use next season as well as giving the organization cap flexibility next summer to pursue Paul George, Russell Westbrook, Will Barton, Avery Bradley, Rodney Hood, Aaron Gordon, Jabari Parker, and/or of course Jason Smiht.
But my point is: I think there are many ways to make the pairing of AD/DC work better than advertised. And while there is urgency to put AD and DC in a position to win as soon as possible, I hope the organization does not try to rush it by taking too many risks. We don't have to sign a max player and/or fire everyone on staff. I want them pick our spots wisely (within reason) and balance risky moves and safe moves. But again to do that, they need a vision and plan to get there. And when a team has 6 returning players from last year's roster (two of those six are Asik and QPon who have barely played), and fires a coach after they make the playoffs (not that I disagreed with it but it did look bad), it doesn't seem to me like there's a clear vision.
So no matter who the Pelicans release, sign, draft, trade for, or fire, we need a vision and a goal from the organization, and we need commitment and patience to the process from the players and coaches. I think leadership starts at the top (in this case its Dell). So in my mind, Dell is on the hot seat more than anyone else. I hope he proves me wrong.

anytime theres a massive salary like carmelo being moved it opens up opportunities for a third team to benefit
the benefits wont be much (in your asik scenario, one year of salary), but its something

So Boston wouldn't roll the dice on Cousins but will on Melo? Pass up 2 of the best wings in the NBA for Melo? I don't understand what's going on up there. All of that space and assets and you might end up with Horford and Melo for 50m/yr? Impressive...

If rather Asik than Crawford

Crawford has roughly the same contract as Asik but it's a year shorter. Let him ride the pine for a year like you'd have done with Asik, then next summer package him with the 2019 pick for a Bazemore/Crabbe level player and still add a guy with the MLE.

from what I've read, Ainge was against Melo at the deadline (idk why he never pulled the trigger on George or Butler) but now he is rethinking his stance after the first two losses to the Bulls

Asik won't play even if he's healthy. Jamal Crawford can at least hit a jumper and contribute

Crawford is not who you remember anymore. He's really old. Plays zero defense, and isn't even a good chucker anymore.
We already have the better jordan chucker.

I think Ainge wants the space to go after Gordon Hayward this summer. If Ainge can't get Hayward or trade for Paul George, then I think he may trade for Melo.

Unless they're crazy, I don't think they're trading any of their high value picks if they go after Melo.
Maybe a Jae Crowder + Smart + 3rd team contract filler

All of that space and assets
Trade Thomas and draft PG with top pick.
Maybe get Melo on the cheap in the trade.
Bring in Gordon Hayward in FA.
Starting Five?
Fultz
Bradley
Hayward
Anthony
Horford
I don't think they are going to win anything with Thomas personally.

Down 0-2 to the 8th seed will cause you to make some extremely rash decisions

they would be trading Melo into the cap space they have this summer. not room for both him and Hayward.
if Ainge is feeling heat, he will unload for George or Butler. Indiana may be desperate to cash out since it looks like George is done there. and the Bulls, despite the 2-0 playoff lead, were a shitshow all season. Butler's not exactly solid there.

That would be the worst use of their assets that I could imagine

They'll trade IT. Ainge isn't an idiot to max him

He's going to be 38 years old.
he can't play defense.
he just had his lowest scoring season in 14 years.
He's gotten worse every year for the last 4 yeas.
yes i was being facetious a bit, but i also thought they both had the same time left on their contracts.
They are both rather worthless.

If Boston has all these assets and they end up with a big 3 of Melo/Horford/Thomas, Ainge shouldn't be welcomed back in that city.
