Brook is injured on the reg and on the decline it seems.

So, the obvious question becomes, if Asik DOES sign elsewhere...what are our options?

Hope he goes somewhere via S&T and you can either execute a multi team trade for someone like RoLo, Chandler, or Koufos, or get a Trade Exception big enough from Asik to S&T one of those 3. If that doesn't happen you're probably looking at a Wright or Biyombo with the MLE.

And then a bunch of minimum players to fill out like 6 more roster spots. That's tough.

If he decides to leave, wouldn't it be best for him and the other team to do it in a S&T?

If a team with cap space can sign him then there is no benefit to doing a S&T unless we give them a reason to. That reason could be a pick, but it could also just be some cash, say a pretend pick and $500k.

It's one less big on the market. That affects Asik's market value.

And now this.

quote:

Rival teams interested in Brooklyn Nets free agents Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young are increasingly convinced that they have no shot at luring either one away from the incumbent Nets, according to league sources.

I found the article from TBW I was looking for earlier, the table shows all the salaries plus the exceptions.

We'll be over the tax if we bring everybody back and use all of our exceptions. Obviously Jimmer and Douglas will be gone, but Ajinca will likely get a raise if we keep him. Getting Asik at a rate lower than his cap hold and not bringing back Ajinca might be the only way to get under the tax right now. But taxes aren't calculated until the end of the year, so dumping Gordon for a cheaper contract at the deadline would do it too.

Someone's already told me Asik didn't belong in the Asik tier, so it may not be as groundbreaking as you think

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that only the 12 most expensive contracts went toward the salary cap.

There is no way to keep all the players and use the MLE and BAE. Also, I think the league minimum contracts for players after top 12 do not count towards cap. Asik likely will not have a contract as high as his cap hold either. We will not approach the tax limits.

I'm not seeing that in the CBA FAQ question about how taxable salary is calculated, but there is a formula where only part of minimum salaries are counted.

quote:

For minimum salary players whose salary is partially paid by the league (see question number 16) only the amount paid by the team (the two-year minimum salary) is taxed.

LINK

An explanation of the reimbursement:

quote:

When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, 10-day or Rest-of-Season contract at the minimum salary, the league reimburses the team for part of his salary -- any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran. For example, in 2011-12 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran was $854,389, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,352,181, the league would reimburse the team $497,792. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. They do this so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive than younger veterans.

I have no idea where I recall that from, but apparently it was stated somewhere if NOSHAU and I have both heard it.

Maybe it was from the old CBA.

I know in the NFL only the 51 highest paid players of the 53 count against the cap.

Don't know about the NBA.
