How do you expect to go about making number 2 a possibility?

I'm not going to put any research into this. But Asik's cap number was around 8m, renounce him. If they trade away Anderson, for nothing or future picks, that is another 8m+. If they also renounce the rights to Babbit, Ajinca and Fredette, they gain another 1M or so (not counting cap holds). That should leave somewhere around 17M or so of cap space. Offer Monroe 2y/25M with an option for a 3rd. He isn't get huge interest and might even take a one year deal. That will leave almost 5M to sign a mid level player. Or they can still use the MLE after that. How far off am I?

The can't use cap space to sign a FA AND use exceptions. I'd imagine that we'd also have to let Cole go to get that much cap space. That's a lot of depth to give up for a good, not great player that may not fit into Gentry's offense.

Since when? I'm pretty sure there is an exception for teams under the tax line and above. They haven't redone the labor agreement yet. Maybe it's a smaller exception, but they would still have one available.

I just find it amazing that the Rockets can somehow manufacture enough room to go after Aldridge. When they have much bigger payroll numbers than the Pelicans. I'm pretty sure it could be done. Unless they really just aren't interested or are just going with what they got..

with all sincerity, you need to study how the cap works before you get in a lather about this. The MLE and BAE are only available if you start over the cap. You cannot use cap room to go over and then use the exceptions

that's not how it works

The luxury tax and salary cap aren't the same thing. The MLE for teams under the tax/over the cap are larger than teams over the tax.

Since forever. To get under the cap you give up exceptions and cap holds. You don't have to give them all up just what it takes to get the cap space you need. For example, Ajinca's cap hold is about $1.2 even though our exception for him can go up to about $5.5. So it might make sense to keep $1.2 on the books rather than renounce him and have a $500k roster hold instead. But if you need that extra $700k then say goodbye to Frenchy.

Renouncing Asik and all the renouncable bench players besides Cole gets you about $5.5 million in cap space. You might as well keep the MLE and all your other exceptions. Short of significant trades the roster as a whole really will be better with Asik than without him.

Yup. Exactly.

There's really no viable choice.

If they trade Ryno and still go over the cap, I guess you still keep your exceptions, but then we are possibly dealing in lux tax territory, which I can't see us doing.

Lux tax is 83ish mil right?

Retaining Asik+MLE+BAE would put us a shade under

Are you including Cole? If you are, that's 10ish guys under contract. Going to need at least 3 more.

Asik is unrestricted, right? What happens if he decides to go elsewhere? Are we in the same cap situation we would be in if we renounced him?

Not that I think it's going to happen. I'm just curious.

Correct. If Asik leaves we'd have to replace him via trade or use the MLE on a big rather than a wing.

Yeah I am(his 3.3 mil)

Think we add a summer league guy+a vet min or 2.

Dell could use douglas+withey to get something and I smell a trip to europe for dell.

Sign and trade would likely happen if he left.

Asik's offensive game is rediculously bad for an NBA player. But Monroe isn't such an upgrade that it's worth messing up our team structure/salary cap situation for. I think we are kind of where we are. We will have to see what Gentry can do with this team.

2 years ago Monroe was considered a superior player to Cousins. His numbers have been steady for 5 seasons and he is only 25. Its not beyond possible he could breakout quite a bit and take the next step (like Cousins). I'd take that risk over the last 5 we tried that failed. He is a safer bet than all of them and we probably make less money than projected..

Once again, how do you propose we get him?

You are going to poop on every way I propose or just try to poke holes in all of them. A GM could make it work, if he wanted. I don't know why everyone is giving Demps a pass. Houston has 2 maxed out stars and a couple of other high dollar guys. Buy they are chasing Aldridge and Draymont Green now. How can they make it work and we can't?
