Greg Monroe would love to play for NOLA

“(He and agent David Falk) are definitely looking at all our options,” he said. “You can see the trend is everybody’s taking shorter deals right now. So, most likely, I might take that route, too, and when the new deal kicks in, get a longer-term contract.
“I’m looking at a two-year deal plus an option” to become a free agent.
About 60 children, ages 6 to 14, participated in the basketball clinic, doubling the total of the first one last year.
“At this age, we focused on basic skills — dribbling, passing, defense and stuff,” Monroe said. “The older ones, we did some typical workouts and drills trying to get them better.”
He said his charitable foundation has funded “between 15 and 20” college scholarships for students in New Orleans and Detroit.

Monroe, who led Helen Cox High School to the 2008 Louisiana Class 4A state championship before playing two years at Georgetown, said he’d be a good fit with the hometown New Orleans Pelicans. Both of the Pelicans’ top two centers from last season, Omer Asik and Alexis Ajinca, are unrestricted free agents.
However, Monroe said the Pelicans have not shown an interest thus far. He has career averages of 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, and last season averaged 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds.
“I’d love to play and represent this city,” he said. “Obviously, they have a guy like Anthony Davis who is a superstar already, and he’s only going to get better.
“I think I could really play well with him. Our games complement each other. I’m a low-post scorer. Obviously he’s a great midrange player.”

Is he a FA? I think he'd work well in a Gentry type offense. A better offensive version of Bogut.

I sure that would play greatly into his decision.
I'm not sure that he fits the Gentry offense or defense, though. He can get out in transition, but is more of a traditional post player on offense, which is one of the least efficient offensive plays and something that I think the Pels would try to stay away from.
ETA: on defense he can't really defend mobile forwards or bulky centers

Well, we can't get him without a sign and trade and giving up assets. And then I think we would only have the Room Exception.

They'd need to do a three-way deal where Asik goes to a third team that would give Detroit something they want.

Bogut and Monroe are in now way remotely close to comparable players.

Monroe is a pretty bad defender but asik can also have some bad games. Wouldn't mind have either or

No. Just no. Monroe is light years beyond both offensively (he averaged over 3 points a game more than both those guys combined) and that pair is nothing special defensively. I've been hoping for this chance for years and the Pelicans haven't even called him yet? Just sucks..

Monroe hasn't proven he's that great defensively.

Yes and no. Have to give up assets to get him, most likely Ryno + Toney Douglas and a 3rd team since the Pistons traded for a stretch 4 already. But making that trade keeps us above the cap so you have all your exceptions. The real problem you run into with Monroe is you turn $8.5 million (Ryno) into $14.5 million (Monroe) meaning we get closer to the tax line a lot quicker by adding/retaining guys.

I didn't mean to compare Monroe and Bogut. Just how they would fit in the offense. And Monroe is a better offensive player. On defense, Monroe's basically Ryno. Asik on offense however is worse than Ryno or Monroe on defense. That's why I think Monroe would be an upgrade over Asik. AD's length will hopefully make up a little for Monroe's defensive deficiencies.

Ok I was wondering. But yea I agree completely with you. I'm not on the asik bandwagon bc he is literally worst offensive player I've ever seen

Monroe could not play the brick wall of a center that the Pelicans desire (Roy Hibbert/Timofey Mozgov types of defenders) and that would be a calamitous combination with Davis. Ever wonder why Davis and Anderson were so defensively permeable? It's because Davis, despite what his block numbers may hint at, is a roaming defender and Anderson can provide little help or resistance when players drive. Monroe would be similar to Anderson defensively, although he would rebound better.
