The real problem you run into with Monroe is you turn $8.5 million (Ryno) into $14.5 million (Monroe) meaning we get closer to the tax line a lot quicker by adding/retaining guys.

Wouldn't they be turning Asik into Monroe? They would have to move Anderson (should have been done already). Which should give them plenty of room. Monroe might even come at a bit of a discount, if they make the deal longer (as the article suggests). It's totally doable and the Pelicans should strike now, while other teams are fighting over Aldridge, Jordan, Love, Gasol and Cousins. We get in first and fair, Monroe would appreciate the attention. That time might have already past though..

Not necessarily, especially given Monroe's defensive deficiencies.

We'd have to let asik walk(or a S&T?)+Move ryno for practically nothing(maybe a S&T with DET but they have Illyasova so not going to happen).

We'd have to keep our exceptions somehow.

It's just unlikely and he's not the best fit.

I really wish someone could describe to me a player that would fit next to Davis. For being the best player in the league, everybody seems to think that he has to have very specific players around him. Somehow a 25 year old borderline all-star Center just won't cut it. Its just amazing..

Again this explains it better than I can:

quote:

For all of Monroe's skills, he lacks the physical strength or athleticism compared to other big men in the NBA. It limits him to post moves and makes him less effective at setting screens, rebounding, and isolation play than players like Zach Randolph, who possess a similar style of play. Additionally, his physical boundaries explain and worsen Monroe's blocking and help defense problems.

His lack of elite strength would lower the amount of open threes for the Pelicans in the half court, something that Asik contributed heavily to with sturdy screens. Monroe's lack of athleticism and quickness would also prevent him from running the fast break with the Pelicans, something that will be the team's staple style under Alvin Gentry.

And while Monroe is a good one-on-one post defender, he lacks any rim protector instincts or attributes that the Pelicans would desperately need if Asik left. The Pelicans defense would ache against penetrating defenses who would keep slashing inside, as neither Davis nor Monroe could choke off the lane.

Finally, Monroe's shot may look nice and smooth, but he shot 24% on jumpshots, and was successful only 32% of the time from 10 to 16 feet, per basketball-reference.com.

And did I mention he doesn't run well?

quote:

The reasoning here is simple; Monroe slows down the game and the Pelicans primarily picked up Alvin Gentry to put the NO2 in NOLA basketball. Monroe's only efficient offensive attempts come when he is in the post, something that is by nature incompatible with a fast-paced team. Although he is a good outlet passer, Monroe would be liable to intense pressure from cutting scorers as the primary post defender, eliminating some rebounding opportunities.

There is a reason the Pelicans or any other team in the league did not make Monroe an offer in last year's restricted free agency. There are few teams that he fits in well with, and the Pelicans will not be one of them, not anymore anyways.

Monroe could not play the brick wall of a center that the Pelicans desire (Roy Hibbert/Timofey Mozgov types of defenders) and that would be a calamitous combination with Davis. Ever wonder why Davis and Anderson were so defensively permeable? It's because Davis, despite what his block numbers may hint at, is a roaming defender and Anderson can provide little help or resistance when players drive. Monroe would be similar to Anderson defensively, although he would rebound better.

He'd fit really well OFFENSIVELY(passing/post game etc)

And why would Det even want Ryno? They just traded for Ersan Ilyasova. They won't want Ryno.

Yeah, you'd have to get a 3rd team involved now. That one Milwaukee/Detroit trade really crushed a lot of potential opportunities many were hoping to see pursued.

I know(went back and edite to clarify)

We'd have to move him for a pick or something or to a 3rd team in a S&T.

DET is actually looking for the same things the pels are(a 3+D wing)

It's just not going to happen here. People need to get used to the idea that we are re-signing Asik, using the MLE and BAE.

Yeah I might bump my MLE SF discussion because it's near that time and our targets have some new news.

Dudley+a guy like O'Quinn would make me happy

I just can't accept that. Asik was horrible and I can't imagine the team going back to that again. It's just not fun to watch and isn't effective. People keep hammering on how we are going to copy the Warriors, when we are a vastly different team. If that is Gentry's plan, then it's not going to work. We are in no way similar to that team. There are no correlations from us to them..

remember this about asik
regardless of how you feel about him as a player, the pels have much more flexibility in adding talent by re signing him than they do by letting him walk

it sounds counter intuitive but it is what it is

pels will re sign asik (hopefully to a short deal) and use the MLE/BAE to add players. There is no other scenario that makes any sense unless they trade anderson

So my choices are..

1. Keep Anderson, Asik and add a couple of mid level guys..

2. Get Monroe, a mid level guy and just re-sign a couple of our FAs (Cole and Cunningham)..

I'll go option 2 every day. Sorry. Maybe Monroe isn't the greatest fit next to Davis. But neither are Anderson and Asik...

IF we give a max to anyone, I want it to be Tobias Harris or Jimmy Butler

I like Monroe, but a max contract for him is too steep especially in today's NBA and to build around AD

they'll re sign asik
they'll extend offers to cole and Cunningham
they'll hopefully use the MLE on a legit SF
rest of the roster will be min salary

next year they'll swing again
