Now this I can get behind. If we get the whistles we deserve, we can bully teams into submission

if QPon is ready to go (which I hope those videos from the Pelicans twitter are indications that he is)... that would be HUGE for the team

he's definitely an added dimension we've been missing

just needs to knock the rust off

Agreed. If this is the case, and McNamara is correct that the team believes Ajinca could be more of a contributor this season due to new wrinkles in the offense, I wonder if the likelihood of stretching Asik increases.

However, I won't get my hopes up until I see Pondexter step on the court for a meaningful game.

I would like to think that if Ajinca can return to form he'd be dumpable, but so few bigs got traded last year I'm not sure that is true. If QPon is back meaning no more need for FAs, and you think you can dump Ajinca mid season and replace him with a minimum guy or Diallo, you kick the Asik can down the road another year IMO.

I know people want to get rid of Asik asap, me included, but it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense right now. getting rid of him and adding some minimum guy does nothing but have us paying Asik for the next 7 years. Won't make us better, so what's the point. I feel pretty confident we will be able to move him next year at the trade deadline, without having to give up anything to actually do it. Just wait and be patient. He'll be gone soon enough.

Good point. My thought was that keeping a contributing Q-Pon and Ajinca would mean we would need to free salary from another source, in order to take on more salary. However, if Q-Pon and Ajinca are contributing, then there likely won't be a need to take on more salary.

Unless Cunningham takes a pay cut you do. But, the tax only applies at the end of the year to actual salary paid. So lets say they go over the tax on paper by $1 million to bring back Dante. You only need to cut $1 million from salary for the year to get back under the tax, so dumping Ajinca in December after about 30 games will cut not quite $3 million from salary paid for the year and get you under the tax. You can even add another minimum guy now or later in this scenario.

Dumping Ajinca is way less painful than stretching Asik. If he's playing better it's probably because of Rondo and Rondo has made all kinds of non offensive bigs look really good so we could probably get by with a minimum guy or maybe even just Diallo by late December.

barring injury, i just dont see where consistent minutes are coming from for him. if they bring Cunningham back, i think he's (along with Hill) playing a good bit of 4 next to solo AD/DC units.

when they do go with a 3rd big, i'd rather roll with Diallo and endure his growing pains than try to squeeze anything from Ajinca.

Post trade and throwing out the 4 tank games at the end where AD/DC were shut down, Ajinca played in 12 of 21 games averaging about 10-11 minutes in the games he did play. I think that's the role they have for him until Diallo is ready to take his minutes. Then you can dump him and on the nights you need someone to be a speed bump for a Marc Gasol just dust off Asik.

I still think ajinca can give a productive 10-15 mins when needed

ETA: as atl said I think it'll be a little bit before diallo is fully trusted. His progress is obvious but not there quite yet.

that's right. Diallo will make mistakes, especially on defense.

yet, if you parse ATL's MP for Ajinca, of those 21 games he counted, he only played more than 10 minutes in 6 of them. Cousins didnt play in 3 of those games (19MP v Detroit, 10 MP v Houston on 3/17, and 18 MP v Denver). the other 3 were v Utah, the Lakers, and Memphis (16, 10, and 14 MP respectively). the other 6 games were all 8 minutes or less. and there are still 9 DNP-CD

i get not wanting to rely on Diallo too much in a year you are trying to make the playoffs. and that injuries/foul trouble happen. but that amount of playing time stays relatively consistent, it seems tailor made for a young guy to get his feet wet. if Diallo isnt earning those minutes, that will be a disappointment to me

Anjiica is wholly replaceable by a minimum level guy. That's the problem. Maybe someone will take him for cash plus a second, but maybe not. We can pick someone up for the minimum who can contribute as much as AA. We don't need a scoring bench big.

Ajinca is useless on defense so I agree, I don't think Diallo is a worse option on most nights. But if QPon is rising from the dead then dumping Ajinca is the cheapeast/easiest way to avoid the tax. I don't think it will make much of a difference but what does it hurt to give Ajinca some run with Rondo for 2 months and see if you can lower the price to dump him to cash considerations?

i think that is a great plan in theory, but NOFOX is right about Ajinca being easily replaceable by a minimum guy off the street. I'd take the bigs in Ballhawk's list over him

never say never, but in this market for bigs, I don't see a buyer for his salary and his production

im not rooting against Ajinca, rather for Diallo. don't we want him to be the better player and earn those minutes in camp? if Diallo can't do that, I will be disappointed in his progress.

I agree and also don't think showcasing Ajinca will help move him/lower his dump price. But it just seems like a Demps thing to do.

the eventual 1-game suspension for Boogie for technical foul accumulation (only slightly joking )

Getting QPon back would be huge for this team. He's the 2/3, 3 and D type of guy that they need to add to the team.

He was. No idea if he still is.

I love how Qpon has been getting paid for 3 years to go to PT, dress nicely and play cards with AD.

I would dump Ajjnca and sign minimum center for a year. Like Withey. He has also issues with defense.
Use money to extend Dante.

Call Asik reps and talk. Maybe he will agree for a discount closer to August 31. At that time he will have less options

I'm just so curious what the day to day is like for Asik at the Pelicans facility and what his relationship is like with his coaches and teammates. Especially now that he assumes he probably isn't going to get any minutes. Does Asik aspire to play basketball in the future? Or is he content to just sit his arse on the bench and do nothing?
