ESPN's Kevin Pelton Ranks Western Conference

Insider Article
This guy also hated our trade for Jrue Holiday. His order in the west is OKC, SAS, Houston, Clippers, Grizz, Warriors, Nuggets, T-wolves, Blazers, Mavs, Pelicans, Lakers, Jazz, Kings, Suns

11. New Orleans Pelicans (2012-13 finish: 14th) The Pelicans have improved as much as anyone in the West by adding Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans to their backcourt. That still may not be enough for a playoff run in the Crescent City, given New Orleans finished 18 games behind the eighth seed a year ago. Better health for Anthony Davis and Eric Gordon also could help close that gap, and if Davis is able to make a leap (and defend opposing centers) in his second season, the Pelicans will be in the mix for the eighth seed.

Pelton is a huge analytics guy.
Both Pelican's blog sites (At the Hive and BSS) have had posts recently discussing why stat guys aren't too high on the Pels moves.
BSS should have a post arguing against that belief coming out soon.

God, that's why I hate analytics. Saying that the blazers and mavs are better is a joke

Thats reasonable. Like he said, if guys continue to develop and stay healthy, I think the 7th or 8th spot is within reach.
I also think Denver is in for a big slide. When you just compare rosters, I don't see how they're a playoff team and we're bottom of the barrel. Im also not ready to put Minny in the playoffs yet, either.
Then there's Dallas who seemed to pick their players using a raffle this summer.

I'm with you on that. Them losing Iggy and Gallinari for part of the year with his ACL, on top of firing George Karl, I think they are in for a decline this year

Nothing new, but the west is deep as hell. The constant playoff battle will be quite entertaining in the west next season. Its like the SEC in football. They are gonna beat the shite out of each other and await the Heat to just stroll in and take the title.

I agree mostly, based on the fact that he factored in EG and AD not being healthy.
However, I can't see the Blazers (who have no depth and a frustrated star) nor Denver (who lost its best player and the coach of the year) doing better than the Pelicans even if EG and AD miss the same amount of time they did last year.
Minni I think will surprise a lot of people this year. (I say this every year but this year its true I promise!)

Why are people still so high on the Timberwolves?

Because Love, when healthy, is a scoring and rebounding machine.

Adelman's a good coach and they have decent talent. That 7-12 tier in the west doesn't have much separation and injuries and hot streaks often play a role in who's in the playoffs and who's in the lottery.

On paper they should be making the playoffs.
I would say that most lower seed playoff teams consist of one legitimate superstar, a quasi-all-star, one good player, and 2/4 average players.
For example: Houston had a super star in Harden, a quasi allstar in Asik, a good player in Lin, and average players in Garcia/Smith/Parsons.
Same kind of analogy can be made with the Hornets in 10' with CP3, DW, and Mek.
Minni has a legit super star in Love, a quasi all star in Pek, a good player in Rubio, and average players in Martin/Brewer/Buddinger.
Basically Minni has a very comparable roster, in terms of talent, to last years Houston team.

Did they ever sign Pekovic?

Not yet, but it's going to happen. They have an offer of 4/$50 on the table and Pek's was hoping someone would bid him up to $55 but it doesn't look like that will happen. But they don't need to get a deal done until he has to play for the Euros in September so I guess Pek's agent is still holding out just in case. LINK

FIFY.
I can't fathom why anyone would like the Nuggets to make the playoffs after they lost 2 of their better players and their coach.

I agree with your FIFY, and your take on the Nuggets
Posted on 7/24/13 at 1:35 pm to gump4402
According to NBA 2013, were 5th best in the league talent wise
