Marc Stein:

Story going online now: League sources tell me Houston has emerged as an increasingly serious threat to sign Chris Paul in free agency.

League sources say James Harden is among those in Houston advocating for the signing of Chris Paul and has made that known to CP3 directly.

I don't get the fit. Harden needs a Klay Thompson, not another ball dominator.

Some guy on PR has been saying for s couple of weeks that Paul is going to the rockets. He says he is friends with the family I thought it was bs but there def seems to be some smoke with him going to Houston

CP3's assists will plummet. Unless he still gets one if Harden makes his free throws.

I don't understand how it will work either. Plus they are going to have to trade all the depth they have at the guard spots because I don't think anyone is taking on Rynos contract.

Paul is 32. I doubt he cares for stats. He needs a guys like Harden more than Harden needs Paul at this stage. But Paul is basically a coach on the floor. His ability to make in game adjustments would be invaluable to a team like Houston who only knows one speed. Paul is not a score first PG so he won't take away any shots from Harden. Harden can dominate on or off ball. Paul would make the Rockets extremely efficient.

CP3 would be a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE fit in Houston. How would two superstars that need the ball constantly like Chris Paul and James Harden coexist?

the same way two ball dominant players like KD/Curry and LeBron/Irving exist.

Man, there's a pretty obvious difference between those two pairings and this one. I'd rather CP3 end up in Houston than SAS or even LAC.

All of those guys you mentioned don't require the ball as much as Harden does to make an impact.

I don't have a problem if this fit will be terrible.
Also don't have a problem that clippers might be screwed...

They are our rivals in the same conference.

Wish CP3 best - but won't cry if this will happen.

Morey said some times ago, that first he signs players, then he is thinking about the style/fit...
Just like this...

Broski, Stein was/is. But, they kept him on through draft and I want to say after agency. He may be done Friday since Woj and The Vertical guys will be joining ESPN

As fit goes, this doesn't make sense to me. Houston is at its best with Harden having the ball in hands and making plays.

They have Beverley already, on a much less expensive contract, for defensive purposes so I don't fully understand the logic from Paul's perspective.

Has CP3 ever demonstrated the ability to consistently relinquish offensive control over the course of a season? I find that the glaring difference between CP3 and those tandems.

He is the textbook definition of a facilitating, ball dominant point guard. It seems very unlikely that at 32 he would be capable of drastically shifting his playing style into a co-facilitator if not a completely secondary ball handler to Harden. Who let's be honest, would probably frustrate Paul quite a lot with his less then surgical style of play. As CP3 does have a bit of a reputation as a micromanager and a bully.

Frankly if I were CP3 I would find SA much more intriguing. That or trying to make the case to let Griffin walk and try and swing some magic deal for Melo and Porzingas. Since Jackson is incompetent it's not out of the realm and both of those players fit with CP's style...Plus that whole odd Porzingas tweet that he quickly deleted about the Clippers says he is down as well. And CP3 is one of the few people Melo seems to listen to and defer.

This is no longer a factor. Parting ways with Knicks today.

Hadn't seen that.

Though anyone worth their salt would rule out trading Porzingas then, so you could scratch that then. If the Knicks can rise above being the Knicks(unlikely lol), I would think they will do their best to find a mutually agreeable path to moving Melo. And I have felt for years that Cleveland and LAC are the only two places you could maybe convince him to do that.

And if Rivers could go to CP and say we could bring in Melo, I can't see how CP3 wouldn't just go back.

It was reported late last night (Jackson)

The reports on CP3 are mixed, at best, at this point. Back in March it was reported that he'll sign the DPE with the Clips, then it was reported roughly a month ago that he'll take visits and then that it's a serious threat he'll leave to most likely San Antonio. Just the other day it was reported that he had a meeting with Clips management to speak about the future and it's most likely he'll re-sign because of the money, now it's these Houston rumors.

Who knows?

Those are legit questions about Paul and Harden. And I'm not sure the answers would be great for Houston.

Same time, I get why they are looking for help there. Harden has played tons of minutes in Houston while posting higher and higher usage rates. He's trolling LeBron about rest. Yet he looks gassed in the playoffs.

And the Rockets are so reliant on Harden for offense that they have no other ideas. Which is a problem in the playoffs with better, smarter defenses

Paul, obviously, helps in both those areas. But, how those two would mesh is a big issue
