i'd love to hear him do an analytics discussion with gamecock, then, and his total shooting percentage

look asik will have a kind of big deal next year, which is irrelevant, and then he'll be making the MLE in teh new cap.

everyone talking about this mythical max guy we're goign to sign (and we need to ban dropping durant in this discussion because so many non-serious NBA fans may start to believe it and i don't want mass suicide) while ignoring if we don't sign asik, we have to dedicate probably half of that mythical cap to a starting 5.

he didn't look nearly as mobile on D as he had in the past. in houston and chicago he was one of the best PNR big man defenders.

Injury was an issue, he improved a lot after he got a week off for the ASB. I also think picking up the pace will help him too. Compare Tyreke taking almost 8 seconds to get the ball across half court vs. a 7 seconds or less offense and I think his sense of urgency all game will be a bit different.

in summary, there are a lot more reasons to be optimistic about asik and his new deal than reasons to worry

the main thing moving forward is stability. our front office has ensured the ability to grow from last year. this is really big for our cornerstone pieces (AD and jrue). this offseason also has made the statement that we believe that a better offensive and defensive system can make our young team grow.

now we're just in the position where we have to avoid being unlucky with injuries

yeah we aren't extremely deep but we have a superstar and a few other high caliber players

I think AD will attract some players going into the 2016-2017 season. I really can't wait to see him hit some corner 3's and create a post up move. We have some good three point shooters so we can spread the defense out if they double up. Should get interesting.

also keeping our team together and moving into a (hopefully) better system will tell our management exactly what we need in FA next year

we have to make some decisions..ryno, eg, tyreke, etc. keeping it together lets our management do this more efficiently

This right che'r. We have yet to see an offseason with flexibility in the AD Superstar era. Will be interesting.

Exactly. And to be honest, $11M for a competent (despite what some may say, Asik is competent) starting 5 is not even that big.

+ infinity. The Durant stuff is ridiculous click bait. Doesn't help that both of the main Pels blogs posted articles pushing it as a realistic option. It's just as careless as some of the more reprehensible Jimmy Smith articles.

If Durant leaves OKC, he sure as hell ain't coming to New Orleans.

Our best shot is to get a couple second tier rising stars

FYI if anyone wants some solid entertainment, Fletch is melting down on Twitter over this signing.

Arguing with "the bird writes" guy over semantics in their tweets.

outside of washington... pairing up w/ someone at lakers? But who is that and is he better than AD? Miami would be interesting....

still there's concern about his foot.

still.... a nicholas batum is probably our best bet.

Fletcher literally doesn't understand the difference between a player option and team option and why we view them differently.

It depends on how much they want to avoid the tax. we are currently at about $75 million with a 9 man roster. Add a $5.5 million SF via the MLE and 3 $1ish million minimum guys to get you up to about $83 million for 13 players and you're dangerously close to possibly above the tax line (it was projected at $81.6 but yesterday they announced a $2 million jump in the cap so people are assuming a similar jump in the tax threshold).

Being a tax team has many negative implications, even if you only barely cross it enough so your actual tax payment is negligible, you lose the refund Dan Gilbert will be giving everyone else. You also get yourself a year closer to the repeater tax which is pretty punitive. You really only want to be a tax team when you're contending, so I can see us going with a Richard Jefferson over a Gerald Green and staying below the tax threshold.

Very, very roughly: the Pels acquired Asik's Bird Rights (aka Veteran Free Agent Exception) when they traded for him. He qualified for VFA status because he hadn't been waived or a UFA in three years, i.e. he'd been on contract for 3 consecutive years. Pels were allowed to re-sign him, regardless of cap space, at any price, up to and including his max with 7.5% annual raises.

Someone please feel free to correct or explain better. I think I have a loose understanding, but am no expert like some other guys here.

That's why I'm a little confused by the Ajinca signing. But maybe they realized the MLE wing market would be trash and decided Ajinca at $5M was better than whomever they could get with the MLE.

i know the old CBA and i dont' think it's changed, so i'll try

bird's rights just means that after a guy is on your team for 3 years, you can sign him to anything you want and you can go over the cap to do so

when we traded for asik, we kept his bird's rights, which means nothing more than we're not worrying about the cap when signing him

we're well over the cap now (with anjica and asik) so it's a non-issue

the bonus to being over the cap is now we have access to certain salary cap exceptions, namely the mid-level. that's where we'll add another piece at some point
