Let the record reflect that I posted my answer without looking at anyone else's. I'm glad to see some folks agree with me, though. I think it's THE choice.
My silver medal answer would have to be:
Blondie -- Heart of Glass

My bronze medal choice.
Like a Prayer by Madonna gets the Prefontaine treatment.

No. That was 1978 well before the synth 80s

This was the first one that popped into my head as well. The video made it a hit. And that's when MTV actually used to show videos all the time.

It's funny, there were a few songs made in the late 70s that really sound like they belong more to the 80s era and are often included because that's where new wave and punk both started. Like "Let's Go" by the Cars. That's a VERY 80s sounding song that was released a little too early to make the cut.
The styles were so definitive and idiosyncratic then, as opposed to say, the difference between music made in 2008 and 2012? There's no real moves made to define eras anymore. At least not within the domain of popular music. Everything moved and changed so fast back then.

Hindi Dindi, you are correct sir.
I was thinking of Number One.
Anyway, have New Toy, and dig Special Star as well (bought the album based solely upon the song New Toy).

Take On Me
Billie Jean
