For me it's this. Maybe because Breakfast Club was the movie of the 80's but something about this song just captures that decade's pop.

Michael Jackson transcends the decade IMO. Madonna does as well although her sound was certainly initially the 80's sound.

Come on Eileen could've easily been from the 70's. Great song, but doesn't scream "80's Pop" to me. Lacks some of the distinct characteristics.

Don Henley -the boys of summer, which, in my opinion, is the best pop song ever recorded

I'd swap out Major Tom (although I like the song) with Soft Cell's Tainted Love, but I like your other examples for the OP.

Major Tom was deliberately a spiritual sequel and homage to Bowie's "A Space Oddity".

I think "I ran" had a little more influence than the others, although it would be my least favorite of all these choices. I guess "I melt with you" would win over "Tainted love" for me.

My top five, to encompass each really large genre of the 80's...

Run DMC/Aerosmith - Walk this way for Rap

Whitesnake - In the still of the night for rock

When Doves Cry - Prince for R & B or I just called to say I love you - Stevie Wonder

Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fear for pop

Information Society - What you're thinking for New Wave, in case some have forgotten this one.. and the grandiose hairstyles.

eta - and is it just me, or could Jimmy Fallon be this guys son?

OR

Relax - Freddie Goes to Hollywood for New Wave.. the box lettered shirt messages .. oh my.
