I've wondered that if Gram Parsons had not died if Keith Richards would have pushed for him to join the Stones when Mick Taylor left. Keith and Gram were tight.

Lots of names mentioned so far that have no business being listed as they had already had a lot of success or notoriety. Hendrix, Cobain, Staley, etc.
I take the OP as going for people who died before their music and talents were fully appreciated. Can't believe it took four pages for this guy to get mentioned, as he epitomizes dying before your time has come.
He should be near the top of anybody's short list, along with..
