Townes didn't die until he was pretty old, so he doesn't really qualify for this particular argument

He was only 52, and as mentioned elsewhere...singer/song writers get better with age.

His cover of Dead Flowers is one of my favorites, and he recorded it about 2 years before he died.

Don Rich...o.k., maybe not a superstar in his own right...but his sound was so distinctive...it was a shame for it to leave this world so soon. Smooth as butter.

Unclear why people are still posting when

Bradley Nowell
Amy Winehouse
Andrew Wood
Buddy Holly
Biggie Smalls

is obviously the definitive top 5.

Could you imagine how much better the world would be today if Biggie Smalls hadn't died, and had made music for, hell, even 5 more years, but hopefully more like 10.*

*Rappers do have primes, and after a while pretty much all of them will start to suck.**

I wasn't alive at the time, so I can't comment on the sentiment at the time, but I've always thought LA Woman was one of their best albums. Certainly the 2-3 before it were pretty bad, but it seemed maybe they were reversing the downslope. But I don't know.

The first name that came to mind for me was Morrison, but after thinking about it I don't know how much more he had to give. The guy lived so hard that he died of natural causes at the age of 27, and as mentioned earlier the bands best album was their first and it was downhill from there.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned tupac, I know he had accomplished a lot prior to dying (albeit a lot more than biggie who possibly is better suited for this list) but he was at the peak of his career when he died.

Meh. The Doors were on a clear downslope when he died

I don't know what the future would have held for them, but LA Woman is one hell of an album. I realize it was a shite show to keep Jim sober enough to finish it and any subsequent albums would have probably been even harder to deal with him, but still would have liked to see where they would have been with a few more albums.

Not sure we read the same book but I love the guy.
I would add Lane Staley but he might have been in the same boat.
