RHCP guitarist? But that was after Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

Jane's Addiction? A lot of stuff going on in there musically and it's all good if in the right mood for it, but is there any good or great guitar?

Is he a "guitarist" or is he just gonna be known as the guy who fricked Carmen Electra?

I will willingly admit that I never listened to a lot of Janes Addiction. Just the standards.

Solid but nothing of his really stands out to me. I like Jane's Addiction but nothing there makes me sit up and say, "Damn that's some good guitar he's playing." He's no Frusciante.

I prefer the stuff he did with Maria carey.

I'm a Janes Addiction fan of XXX, Nothing Shocking, and Ritual. I still listen to them regularly. I think he has his own style and sound but I do not consider him a guitar great. I say that when I still think Janes carried a grunge look, sound, attitude before there was a grunge label and even being from LA. When LA was all hair, glamour, and excess, bands like Janes and Chili Peppers were totally different.

Don't really care about his skill level when he puts on the quality of live shows I've seen. Perry Farrell and him have instinctual chemistry, which is funny because their personalities on paper look like they wouldn't necessarily go well together. He's just got a magnetic sex appeal while playing (don't care if it sounds gay, bring a girl to a Jane's show). Even to those girls who aren't overwhelming Navarro fans on paper get wet being around him playing guitar topless and interacting cool as a cucumber with a very bi-curious appearing Farrell.

He embodies style on a guitar. That's my thoughts.

Side note - he's an amazing host/judge on Ink Master. He's by far the least biased of the 3 and somehow/someway, the least egotistical.

You must see him live to have an accurate idea of the skills he brings as a guitarist.

Hell no. He's not good enough to be Josh's tech, much less fill in for Frusciante.

Meh. Good songwriting doesn't always translate into good music - or music that I like, anyway.

Indeed. And Then She Did... has some incredible guitar work too. But I think I would agree he isn't a Steve Vai or anything. What made JA great was their overall chemistry and stellar orchestration...

as well as Eric Avery and Steve Perkins. These two are some of the best ever at bass and drums, especially Perkins on drum. He is severely underrated.

I had never listened to them before, but I saw Jane's Addiction at Voodoo last year and Navarro absolutely shredded, it was badass.

He's a good guitarist, but he's not very original. He just hasn't written that many good riffs/songs. He's more a player than a writer.

This. I pretty much didn't care either way about him. I just knew him as the dude who dated Carmen Electra, so I respected him less.

Then I saw him at Lolapalooza, and he was incredible. He has the stage presence of a great front man, which is an amazing skill/gift in itself. It goes without saying that he is an excellent lead guitarist.
