Because it's real men singing about real issues. Tough times with your lady, losing your favorite dog, drinking beer with your buddies down by the river, things that everyday gents can relate to.

The Frio or Guadalupe river, I-35, BBQ, cold beer, beat up Chevy truck, bird dog... (insert small Hill Country town). Voila.. a hit!

Genuine question. Who is the Elvis of Red Dirt? I assume it is Robert Earl Keen?

REK would probably tell you it's Townes if your talking about being the greatest influence of the genre. Ray Wylie Hubbard is the living guru for Texas/Red Dirt artist to go see. Can't argue with the suggestions already mentioned except for maybe Pat Green, anything post George's Bar is , he nearly killed the whole movement . But here are a few more to check out other than the bigger names already posted - The Great Divide and Mike McClure who was the lead singer before they broke up, Bruce Robison, Uncle Lucius, Bart Crow, Zane Williams, Kyle Park, Cody Johnson, and Walt Wilkins.

Pat Green is the artist who got me turned on Texas/Red Dirt music. George's Bar was the first CD I bought of his. Saw him in 2002 and the Georgia Theater in Athens.

One of the most fun nights of my life was when Roger Creager opened for Pat Green at Fred's under the big top back in like 03-ish. That was around the time Fred's started putting that big tent in the parking lot I think.

It was nutsack to a-hole in that place....

If you've never seen Wade Bowen play "Who I Am" the acoustic version live and in person....well hell you are selling yourself short. My wife wouldn't let this be the first song at our wedding ( )...but it was played real early and it's always our song to me (yea I know you don't care who gives a shite)....I met my wife when a Texas country act was going to the Varsity at least monthly....and we had some good times there

Same could be said of many RR songs as well.

I like Randy Houser, but I doubt he falls into this category. Too mainstream.

I'm a little late to the thread but just found out about it. Been a red dirt fan for about 4 years now. Went to Medicine Stone in Oklahoma for the first time last year and had a damn good time. Just wondering if any of you know of Jason Isbell? The guy is incredible!

Solid list.

My playlist is probably a little more mainstream Texas country but it would include:

Wade Bowen
Kevin Fowler
Ryan Bingham
Whiskey Myers
Casey Donahue
Jason Boland
REK
Pat Green
Flatland Cavalry
Shane Smith and the Saints
Brandon Rhyder
William Clark Green
Cody Johnson
RR
Josh's abbott Band
John Bauhman
Turnpike
Stoney LaRue

I just confirmed for completeness haha

Check out the music fest in Steamboat Springs the first week of January, it is a week straight of solid music.

It's been going on for probably 10 years or so

Anyone a fan of Randy Rogers? I've followed him since back in early 2000s when he was playing Cheatum St warehouse in San Marcos

Great songwriter

Been reading through here and have seen some bands and singers I know and some I had to look up myself. A couple I haven't seen as much as others are two of my favorites. Reckless Kelly and Cross Canadian Ragweed/ Cody Canada and the Departed. If you haven't heard of these two/ three bands then I STRONGLY recommend giving them a listen.
