AlxTgr, Live at Gruene Hall is great along with the obligatory Viva Terlingua

I also haven't seen Dale Watson mentioned. He's got a great classic, honkytonk sound

I thought wave on wave was his first Nashville hit. I've always hated that song.

I think you are right about that.

Pop your cherry the right way and go to this event. I've been several times and it's awesome.

Oddly enough, Cody Canada actually played Carney Man for the first time, in I don't know how long last weekend.

Last time I saw Ragweed at the Varsity years ago (probably the Garage tour), some ol' boy up front was screaming for Carney Man in between every song.

Cody finally says "If we play that shite, will you shut up??" They mail in the song real quick and Cody tells him "Now shut the f#ck up!" And they go into Cold Hearted woman or something like that. Never saw a band hate playing their hits as much as CCR

Oh and I forgot how incredible that first Chris Knight record is

I heard about Cody Canada pulling that stunt after CCR broke up, but never before.

He came to Spirits a while back, wasn't real engaging, but put on a nice show.

He is about my favorite in the genre. Enough Rope, It aint Easy being me, Hell aint Half Full, Leaving Souvenirs, The Rivers Own, and North Dakota are some of my favorites.

Spirits had the Ballroom Thieves a month or so ago that were great.

Good suggestions. I'd also recommend some of the old Pat Green stuff, like Three Days. Cody Canada & The Departed Stoney LaRue Cody Johnson Charlie Robison Cody Jinks Micky & The Motorcars Josh Ward Wade Bowen Turnpike Troubadours They just had a music fest in Steamboat Springs a couple weeks ago. I'd say most on the list are pretty legit.

They are all really good to see live. I've seen Jason Boland and The Stragglers play just as hard in front of 20 people as they did in front of 200 people.

The one, and I mean one, bad performance I've seen was REK at The Varsity with about 10 people there. Saw him at HOB not too long after that, and it was awesome like normal.

Before all of his stuff went down, I saw Stoney LaRue in Houston play by himself at a bar. Played around 15 of his songs, and took requests for the rest of the night. After he got done, we took some shots at the bar and he bitched about the drink prices, so we went back and got drunk on his tour bus. Funny thing is I've taken a lot of shots with him at three different bars, and he never gets free drinks

One common theme with TX/Red Dirt guys is they are on tour basically all year and play bars and food/drink festivals (other than the coup de grace at Steamboat)

Even though I live no where near Texas, Ive been able to catch Wade Bowen(x3), Josh Abbot Band(x3), Randy Rogers Band(x2), Casey Donahew Band, Stony Larue, JB and The Moonshine Band, Granger Smith(before he went Nashville), Whiskey Myers, and Aaron Watson.

Cody Jinks played 3 sold out shows here in Nashville a month ago, but I wasnt able to make any of the shows.

Im planning a Texas trip sometime this year. Gonna take about a week, and travel the state and see these guys at home. The only must is that Im going to see someone at Gruene Hall.

My favorite Texas artists in order are JB and The Moonshine Band, Cody Jinks, William Clark Green, Josh Abbott Band, Wade Bowen, Aaron Watson, Randy Rogers Band, Mickey and The Motorcars, Whiskey Myers, Reckless Kelly, and Cody Johnson.

Late to the thread but I feel like this is a prerequisite to being good Texas/Red Dirt music. As in the live albums are all better than the studio stuff, least IMO.

Regarding "Carney Man" I've always wondered if that was written as a joke or whatever. I can't think at the moment but I heard many stories where bands have written songs they hate that then become super popular with their fans and they get stuck having to play them all the time.

This is one of my favorite Texas Country/Red Dirt songs. Regardless of where you are from, if you like being out in the country this sums up the sad effects of suburban sprawl.
