I consider James Brown funk

Don't really put him in the same category as Sam and Otis.

I can't pick between Cooke and Redding

So you want emotion from Sam Cooke?

Folk that wanna hear a more raw, emotional Cooke should listen to this....

1. Otis
2. Cooke
3. Brown

The pure raw emotion in every Otis Redding song epitomizes what Soul music is supposed to be IMO

Sam Cooke man... the Harlem Square album is my favorite live album ever. Especially the version with the neon sign cover from 80’s. It is gritty and raw as HELL. The new version of this album which is on Spotify tunes out all the crowd noise and the sax...

I feel if most people had heard this album, the Soul Stirrers stuff, and some of his other albums like Night Beat, this wouldn’t be much of a question...

Otis in my opinion too--I always thought that for someone so young it was crazy how much raw emotion was in those vocals.
Died at 26--horrible loss.

1) Sam Cooke

The other two...meh

Speaking of Otis Redding, check this out.

Warning! Pretty horrific and graphic. This is not for the faint of heart.

redding
cooke
brown

my rankings are based purely on who i like to listen to the most, not for what i think they mean to music as a whole.

I can see it, but I think he is too often just "Dock of the Bay" Redding, and not enough "Try a Little Tenderness" or "I've Been Loving You Too Long" Redding.

For me, "I've Been Loving You Too Long" might be the greatest soul/R&B song ever made. There is so much force of passion in that song that it just destroys you.

Sam Cooke is no slouch and neither is The Godfather, but Otis just can convey the feeling so much stronger than the other two
