The entire list.

Like I said, prior to the sentimentality of Princes death, here is a Rolling Stone article of the 100 greatest musicians. Prince is not in their Top 10. And I think their committee knows far more about musicians abilities, talents, influence than some random Tigerdroppings posters

Prince logs in at #27

Not that I really care about where he falls on a list but...

quote:

a composer, conductor, or performer of music

So are you measuring the musicianship, songwriting/arranging, or the cultural legacy?

I think it's safe to say Paul or John are in their own category about anything.

Elvis and Johnny relied heavily on people like Carl Perkins and sam phillips as far as music goes. I think it's safe to say Prince out trumps those two in songwriting and music. Nobody trumps Elvis in being a cultural icon though. Not even Paul/john/Beatles IMO. Bob marley maybe. Johnny out performing or having a cultural impact over Prince though? I'm a die hard Cash fan and don't believe this in any category. Elton relied on Bernie Taupin with his songwriting and I've never seen Elton play multiple instruments or have seen him in the studio so that's a push at best.

quote:

And that's not even getting into the impact they had on movies, TV, fashion, culture

It's almost like you don't acknowledge Prince's impact with any of that?

But yeah, deaths usually catapults judgement. It's almost like people forgot how much of a freak Michael Jackson was.

I will say this about Prince, I feel that Prince could walk on stage at a concert of pretty much any genre and blow the crowd away. Country, rock, blues,R&B/hip hop, & pop fans would immediately start singing along.

Hell Jimmy Buffet covered Purple Rain last night at his concert in NC and the crowd was loving every minute of it.

His music had no bounds.

Someone dropped the ball on that list of 20 albums where one musician played every instrument. Tom Scholz did NOT play drums on the first Boston album and he damned sure didn't sing it. That's the great Brad Delp singing and Sid Hashian on drums.

Where do you people come up with this shite?

It's not like he's Mark Furhman.

You'd have to go back to Mozart, Beethoven, etc... to find names that belong in the same sentence as Prince. Regardless of whether or not you enjoyed his music. Talent.

I love Elton john and all but him not writing his music kind of removes him from that conversation, IMO.

He wrote 100% of the music. He didn't write the lyrics. Bernie Taupin kind of blows at times and his lyrics didn't keep up with Elton John's music. Pre-1974 Elton John is incredible stuff.

Name 5 better
In the 20th century? Robert Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix...that's eight off the top of my head just from the past 100 years. And that's without mentioning Bowie or Clapton. Or any bands.

Robert Johnson

Prince was a better singer

Louis Armstrong

Maybe

quote:

Elvis Presley

Didn't write his own music. Prince did

quote:

John Lennon

Prince was a better stage performer

quote:

Paul McCartney

See above

quote:

Bob Dylan

Prince was a better singer and performer

quote:

Miles Davis

Miles Davis discussed Prince: “His father took him to see James Brown when he was young, he got on the stage and danced with him. He has that, he has Jimi Hendrix, and Marvin Gaye. ... He combines all that, all the time. That’s what he is. And his concept on the stage is like Charlie Chaplin." Davis later compared Prince to Brown, Gaye, Hendrix, and Chaplin again in his 1989 autobiography, this time adding Sly, Little Richard, and Duke Ellington to the mix. "I think Prince's music is pointing toward the future," he wrote.

quote:

Jimi Hendrix

I'll give you this one

quote:

Bowie

Prince was a better musician

quote:

Clapton

Ask Clapton who was the better guitar player

Yeah. I would easily have Prince and Hendrix above all others in that post.

Mates, has anybody brought up when Prince wrote a song for the Vikings prior to their NFCCG game versus our beloved Saints?

A huge portion of this thread is retarded. Whether he was someone's style or not, the guy was a major talent and influence.

Prince is undoubtedly a top 3 American artist of all time

He was my favorite solo artist of all time and strictly IMO, was the greatest artist from the states alive as of three days ago

Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Brian Wilson
Michael Jackson
Bob Dylan
Bruce Springsteen
Jimi Hendrix
Bob Dylan
Johnny Cash
Billy Joel
Elvis Presley
Stevie Wonder (bonus points for handicap)
Elton John

You forgot Ray Charles.

Lists suck and reflect biases of those who produce them. Prince was a rare talent.

Huge, huge loss, and a hell of a virtuoso. That being said, enough shitting on Elvis FFS. I get it, a legend just died, and you want to take up for him....but you're not earning any cred by minimizing the legends before Prince. You better believe Elvis would've at least have gotten a co-writing credit on most of his songs, had they been recorded & released years later and under different circumstances. He arranged the frick out of those songs so much, he practically made them his own...so a little respect for the King, please.
