One of the best artists of all time. The manufactured plastic they put out these days couldn't touch him. He was always my favorite.

True story - I (still) have a ticket dated January 1, 1985 to see him at Reunion Arena in Dallas. It started raining and was going to turn into freezing rain, so my mom wouldn't take us. I'll never have the chance to use it now.

Rest in peace, Prince.

This is a crushing blow to the greatness of American Music.

I've always been jealous of his talent. He was so musically gifted that the gods themselves must have been jealous.

The Purple Rain solo he played at the 2007 Super Bowl was epic.
I used to have to work every SB to cover one of my then-colleagues whose cousin played in the NFL and would always invite her to his SB party (which was occasionally at the game itself).

In '07 we had just gotten a 55" HD DLP set at work and I managed to time my break around the halftime show. By coincidence another co-worker of mine, also a musician, came by just as it started, so we watched it together.

After "Purple Rain" ended, we just stood there, stunned. Something about that performance, in those conditions, was just magic.

RIP Mr. Nelson.

musical genious

-Wrote songs for himself and others with several #1's
-Mastered just about every instrument you could play. Heard he played like 40 instruments to perfection.
-Normally recorded albums with himself on every instrument.
-Maybe a top 5 guitar player of all time and easily in top 10. (Top 3 for me)

Dude was definitely up there on the talent level and I would be willing to bet that most musicians would call him a genius.

From Justin Timberlake's fb page

It was Raspberry Beret. I was 4 years old. Yes, 4. I remember that I instantly loved it. "Mommy, who is that singing?" Seems weird but it's true.
More than a "once in a lifetime" artist... Just a ONCE IN FOREVER ARTIST. I'm still in shock as I write this and I feel this overwhelming grief. But, we should all turn away from that and HONOR this musician that changed all of our lives, our perspectives, our feeling, our whole being. From another planet? Probably. Royalty, for sure. Us worthy..? Laughable.
They say don't meet your idols... That they let you down. But, some of my greatest, funniest (yes, he was hilarious), and most prolific encounters and conversations about music came from the moments that I spent with him. It would be silly to say that he has inspired our music... It's beyond that.
He's somewhere within every song I've ever written.
I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician. But his music will never die.
Prince, NOTHING COMPARES...

When I lived in Hollywood, my g/f and her friends brought Morris Day home one night from a club. 2008... maybe. It was a little weird. They didn't know who he was other than the headliner at the club. No one invited him to the house. He just tagged along for the ride.

Morris Day and the Time - Jungle Love

Day is probably 5'4" tall. Prince was 5'2". I doubt either one of them weighed much over 100 lbs.

Your not smart

ETA: Or your smart and have poor taste in music. No offense meant, but ask any real musician if Prince is not an absolutely incredible player and they would likely disagree with you.

I know this is not one of his songs, but Prince was so so talented. He took this George Harrison solo and absolutely destroyed it (starts @ 3:28)!

Wow ..

Thanks for that, that was epic and yet was so simple for him.

RIP Sweet Prince

He wrote lots of pop hits, but his talents as a musician were far above the poppy tunes that made him rich.

I know exactly what you mean -- I was never the biggest fans of his pop songs. I was always in awe of the talent. Yeah, sure, his songs were lightweight pop, and were probably beneath his talent.

will be my all time music regret.

Saw him twice in 1997. Sat 15th row in Lafayette..."The Purple Circle". Will never fricking forget it.

Had tickets to 1985's "Purple Rain Tour" at the Superdome. Interstates froze up and I couldn't go. Still have the tickets:
