In history? I'd probably start with Bach and Mozart and go from there. How many could we find before even the invention of the phonograph?

In the 20th century? Robert Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix...that's eight off the top of my head just from the past 100 years. And that's without mentioning Bowie or Clapton. Or any bands.

He was an icon. A legend. Top 5 in history? I think you're letting your emotions cloud your judgment.

He's not even the best musical artist from Minnesota.

I know plenty about Prince. He was supremely talented and influential. But to call him a top 5 artist EVER is straight up hilarious. I know others would disagree (some would agree), but give me Bob Zimmerman over Prince.

Elvis over Prince? Musically? That's laughable. As is most of your list.

Obviously in terms of pure musical skill Prince is better than Elvis. But pure technical proficiency isn't the end all be all of what defines a great artist.

Good HuffPost article on Prince's genealogy, all four of his grandparents trace Louisiana originally..

I appreciate what Elvis accomplished, but the King never wrote a song in his life. He basically ripped off black artists (like most white artists of the time) and provided white radio with an alternative to "race" music.

Prince on the other hand wrote so many songs that he dumped them onto other artists...The Time, Sheila E. Chaka Khan, Cindy Lauper, Stevie Nicks, Joan Osborne and on and on.

While I was never blown away by his lyrical content, no sane person can deny his abilities to write, perform, arrange, produce and market his own music. Again, don't overlook the fact that the man changed the musical landscape much like the Beatles did. No one had ever combined so many different influences to create a new type of pop music.
