Supremely talented, tormented, and a consummate musician.

His gift for understanding what the public wanted in the 80´s, after going the hard route, and putting out an amazing album where he played everything, says it all.

I never got into his big time stuff, probably because it was too perfect, the ´persona´ he had created, etc. Just wasn´t for my tastes, but I always respected him.

The throwaway shite he did for Morris Day and the Time was absolutely amazing, and for him was simply that (throwaway shite).

I think he died of aids, cannot prove it, but he was tremendously marked by his parents´ situation (which made him drive like few). I´m sure he boned women without protection at times, and shouldn´t have. He may have taken it up the arse as well, who knows, but he was an extremely talented musician (I just never got into his stuff like many did).

He was a genius.

Ahh, my favorite song was ´When You Were Mine´.

I don't think so.... He would have showed much more severe symptoms if this were the case....

He was tremendously tiny to begin with, we´ll never know.

He was out of the spotlight for a long time, first, for recording company differences and the negotiation of rights, then, I´m not extremely versed in his history, but there certainly was more than just becoming a Jehovah´s Witness.

Anyway, my comment was a bit crass, it comes off as I´m trying to belittle him. That´s not the case.

He was absolutely amazing.

This is very true... We may never know. But just a week ago he put on his usual show of about 90 mins in Atlanta... He has never just sat there and performed.. It was constant movement... I doubt if he was that close to death from Aids I doubt he could have puled that off........ IMO. The sad part of this is that he is gone... It doesn't really matter why........

Incredible quote.

When Clapton says that, well, there is nothing else to be said.

MTV is playing nothing but Prince videos right now. First time I've watched MTV in close to 20 years.

Full concert from 1982. In black and white and looks likes its recorded from a VHS but still amazing. Just one big shred fest. And he's only 24.

People forget how great a songwriter he was too. Sinead O'Connor's"Nothing Compares 2 U" was written by him and has made numerous lists of top 100 songs of all time.

I talked to two people tonight who were at that show. They said he was horrible, and looked frail (and both were big fans, one having seen him in Washington DC twelve years earlier and saying that was the best concert he´s ever seen).

but musical genious??

Prince could play 28 instruments.

He composed/arranged/performed all the instruments, sang all the lead & background vocals on his very first album at 17.

That's a musical genius, especially compared to other RnR/Pop/Indie artists.

I get why some people don't understand how great Prince was on the guitar. His image hardly screamed "rock god" and he was very protective of his music and made it difficult to find a lot of his stuff online before copyright and DMCA claims got it taken down. But other musicians, including legends of guitar-playing, agreed the Prince was one of the very best.

Check around the 3:30 mark here, hopefully before it gets taken down:

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Edit, because I phrased the original statement very badly: I meant to say that it was covered by one of the undisputed greatest guitarists ever, Clapton, so there's a lot of pressure to measure up, and Prince performed marvelously.

Sorry, I should have said that Clapton did it best, so comparisons to him are going to be inevitable.

His initial deal with Warners was ground breaking. At that time no unproven artist had ever been offered a 7 album deal, and when he asked them for full control of production, they sent super producer Ted Templeman to test him. After watching Prince write, perform, arrange and record a demo, Templeman went back to the Warner executives and told them, "he doesn't need a producer, he doesn't even need an engineer. Give him what he wants and get out of his way." The rest is history.

He was truly a child of the midwest and by the time Purple Rain was released the influence by the hard rockers (Kiss, Nugent, Segar) who ruled that part of the country could be heard. He left behind the falsetto, picked up a Fender Tele, plugged that bitch in, stepped on the overdrive pedal and changed the musical landscape forever.

No one had ever infused James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Lennon and McCartney the way Prince did. RIP brother

While that isn't "his" music, it's perhaps the perfect tribute to him. He stepped totally outside his genre, and just owned that song. The solo was amazing, but it wasn't just the technical part, it was that it all still fit within the overall performance seamlessly.
