Im a normal mid 30s white dude that grew up with the black album and got to see Metallica for the first time two weeks ago. I have started going back and listening to their older stuff and im really digging it.

Im late to the party so im curious what the general consensus on their best and worst albums are?

I really like their new album. It sounds hard like the 80s stuff.

IMO my favorite albums are

Black
And Justice for All
Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightening
Hardwired to Self Destruct
Kill Em All
Load
Reload

the rest

As a fan of classical music, the S&M album with the SF Symphony is my favorite Metallica album.

That being said, Master of Puppets is probably the best, with St Anger being the worst, and the gap in between is incalculable.

Kill Em All
Master Of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
...And Justice For All

In that order. Don't care much for any of their others, though Black is tolerable.

Why does Justice for all get hate?

Also why does it sound so different from the others and raw? I love the drums in it

Because the mix is shite despite the wonderful compositions and songwriting.

That's the complete and utter absence of Jason Newsted's bass you're hearing.

However, Lars' drum sound on that record proved to be highly influential among the metal community in the coming years.

Their only truly bad albums are St Anger and Lulu. Load and Reload are far from their best work but still enjoyable to a certain extent. Death Magnetic is decent enough. Everything else they've done has been great.

I can't even begin to rank the first 4 albums, as they are all great & unique. I put them up there with Sabbath & Pantera's first 4. You can have the rest.

I hope my rankings didn't imply any hatred towards And Justice For All. I LOVE that album. I just like the other 3 a little better. To Live Is To Die is one of my favorite Metallica songs.

So to go along with this, what are some similar bands from the 80s that I can listen to similar to early Metallica?

I'm not a megadeth fan and I did download some Slayer and like what I'm hearing.

Looking for something hard as shite without sounding like Cookie Monster or too cartoonish

There's really not a band like Metallica. I'd say the 5 big metal bands of the 80's were Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden and Pantera.

Metallica and Megadeth were the only ones I really liked.

Curious what everyone's top 3 Metallica songs are? Btw Spit out the Bone on the new album kicks arse.

Listening to some Pantera and damn, was there not a more crisp distinct sound than Dimes guitar? Genius
