No way. Every song minus One is repetitive and lacks any melody. Every song is structured just about the same.

You must be young and grew up on that album and other stuff like it, such as Pantera.

Although each of those albums are classics, there are still quite a few fillers on each track. Plus, Iron Maiden's sound didn't really undergo a great deal of change or progression during that time.

The second and third Judas Priest records are phenomenal, but Stained Class and Hellbent for Leather/Killing Machine are a bit overrated.

British Steel is arguably Priest's weakest album prior to Turbo.

Tend to agree, but...any 4 Sabbath consecutive albums negates your argument.(Ozzy or Dio albums, not Tony Martin)

How so? Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die are the obvious duds from 1970-83. That prevents either of the Dio records from being able to be included in such a discussion, and it also puts a damper on including Sabotage and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

I have to disagree. The only thing hurting that album is the production quality (e.g. volume of Jason's bass). From a writing and musicianship standpoint it is considered by many critics and fans to be the epitome of technical thrash metal.

Metallica was so far ahead of the pack when that album was released that it's impossible to conceive them regressing so much, in terms of simplifying arrangements, by the release of Metallica.

Wow man. I dont get this. AJFA is a masterpiece and could very well be considered one of the greatest metal albums ever in a tie with RTL. Every single song on that album stands up on it's own.

Agree. "Blackened" and "One" are sure-fire top 10 Metallica tracks.

bullshite. The tracks on side B sound completely different from those on side A.

And melody isn't the end-all-be-all when acknowledging complex or magnificent songwriting. Hell, death metal is some of the most complex music you will ever hear and the majority of it prior to the emergence of the Gothenburg Sound and late Death lacks any sort of melodic quality.

Yeah......no.

I think Dave Mustaine is a genius and Rust in Peace is a masterpiece, but the first four Metallica albums are really untouchable.

AJFA is most definitely not overrated. That album is an electric guitar symphony.

AJFA is overly compressed and sounds like metal in a drum. That is a production issue. The tunes are great and it is NOT overrated. As far as Pantera not competing with Metallica???? Give me a freakin break. Pantera in their heyday made Tallica sound like Crosby stills and Nash. Maiden, Priest and Sabbath all had several better 4 album runs than Metallica.

Disagree with your premise, but Countdown to Extinction is freaking phenomenal.

This guy knows what he is talking about. So spot on. AJFA was so far ahead of the game at the time. I hate that they dumbed themselves down to the mainstream with the Black Album but they got what they wanted. Worldwide fame.

Pantera pretty much kept metal alive during the 90's when Metallica went on their sabbatical. I am glad Metallica have re-found their true roots over the last decade. Pantera still never gets the true respect it deserved. They were that good.

Calm down Steve, you are hopped up on Metallica and saying silly stuff.

I like Metallica and MD and the difference probably lies with individual taste, two great bodies of work

I think many thrash metal, and more importantly extreme metal, fans hated Pantera for "dumbing" down the music by implementing groove into the music. The fact remains that they are one of the most influential groups to ever don the heavy metal banner and helped keep alive the genre in the midst of dark, gloomy music scene dominated by grunge and the alternative scene.

Contrary to most posters here, I couldn't agree more and have been saying the same thing for years. It's not even close. After Justice, it's pretty much all shite for Metallica except for the cover songs. They haven't made a decent album in over 25 years now.

On the flip side, I'm still excited to hear new Megadeth tunes every time they release something, and am especially looking forward to the upcoming album with Chris Adler.

The first 4 Metallica albums are hard to compete with by any act, but I'd take Peace Sells over any of them except for maybe Masters Of Puppets.

And the first 4 Iron Maiden albums, including Iron Maiden and Killers, are right up there too, along with any of the first six Black Sabbath albums.

all excellent picks. i prefer the 80's run priest and maiden's albums over the first four metallica. not a big fan of and justice. good writing---terrible sound.

I also like queensryche's string of
the warning
rage for order
operation mindcrime
empire
to metallica's first four.

Music is subjective, but IMO no metal band (Sabbath excluded) ever put out an album that stands up to ...AJFA, production aside.

I'll take that one step further. Rust in piece was the pivot album where the band moved from great thrash albums to knowing how to write catchy riffs.

From that album on, the band became focused on writing songs and the thrash stuff only entered here and there.

For metallica, learning how to write a good rock song is what ruined their legacy. Their early stuff had so much momentum and drive that anything less than a perfect 10 of an album seemed like a letdown... For megadeth it was the complete opposite. I look at megadeths earlier stuff and see it as immature and chris poland's/jeff young's work was too sloppy. But as they picked up marty and started writing better songs the band got better. Risk was the beginning of the end both for the momentum of the band and for marty. Just a tired album filled with last ditch efforts to chart a hit on radio stations knowing that metal was all but busted.

Dave ruined himself. Kicked out Ellefson from the band and went through a miserable debacle of a megadeth sideshow with revolving doors of proven musicians coming in and out. A lesson in futility by trying to manufacture albums with experience instead of creativity.

For whatever reason he saw the light and realized what a shithead he was being and got ellefson back along with taking the gamble on a virtuoso guitarist the same way he did with marty and they put out two solid albums with thirteen and super collider. I put both of those albums on equal ground with cryptic writings. Good songs, easy to listen to.

Overall... I would take metallica in the eighties plus all their cover songs and put that against anyones legacy in music. But i think i would still rather listen to megadeth's discography if push came to shove.
