but Master of Puppets has a very slight dropoff, and then And Justice for All is the most overrated metal album of all time.

Wow. Disagree I guess. Puppets and justice are #1 and #2 respectively for me in their catalogue

I also like queensryche's string of
the warning
rage for order
operation mindcrime
empire
to metallica's first four.

Good call. I forgot about those................

Woah there, Good Sir. It's a fantastic album, but let's not get carried away here. I'm not even sure it's the best thrash record, let alone the best metal release ever.

Touche, Sir.

However, as much as I like The Great Southern Trendkill, it still remains one of the least accessible albums in metal. It's a bit too chaotic for fans of the three prior albums and is almost too dark and brooding for its own good.

I like Geoff Tate as much as the next progressive metal fan, but under no circumstances would Rage for Order qualify as an "elite" album.

I like the discussion in this thread. I side with Metallica obviously.

My main issue with Megadeth is I cannot staid Mustaines voice. That just kills it for me. That being said I love Hangar 18.

It is their 3rd best, in my opinion, behind RTL and MOP, but overrated and all time? The Black album is overrated. "The Unforgiven" is one song I will always change if it comes on Pandora or the radio. I do not own it on Mp3 and I have 30-35 Metallica songs downloaded.

Megadeth? Their biggest hit was Symphony of Destruction. That is a very tight, non-melodic metal song. Good? Sure, but it has nothing on a song such as Ride the Lightning or Eye of the Beholder, among others. I'm not a Megadeth fan and likely have only heard about 40 percent of their whole body of work compared to around 80 percent of Metallica's, but I just don't see how you could say that.

aside from one song---"gonna get close to you", rage is an incredible record. it wasn't like anything bands were doing at the time.
it's hard to beat the first three metallica records, but queensryche did it with their first three.

At this point in their careers, Megadeth can still run rings around Metallica as far as technical ability.

GOAT albums for both:

Megadeth = Rust in Piece
Metallica = Master of Puppets

The one argument you could make against Pantera is the lack of technical musicianship utilized in the songwriting. Plus, the dubbing of rhythm guitar to compensate for the lack of another guitarist is also something to consider.

Pump the brakes there, Man. Metallica turned an underground movement into a mainstream and critically respectable genre. When you consider how much they influenced everyone around them and how much their sound evolved in less than four years, there is no way that you can put Queensryche on the same playing field.

Queensryche dominated progressive metal, but I would argue that subsequent progressive musicians were more influenced by prog rock bands from the '70s than they were Queensryche. Hell, even Dream Theater seem to mimic Metallica's guitar sound more than that of Queensryche.

Yeah, evolved to shite. Compared to RTL.

I wouldn't say they were progressive in the truest sense. But they also started to suck after Empire/Promised Land.
Geoff Tate ruined that band.

No progressive band is truly ever 100% progressive. Maybe they wouldn't be labeled as progressive when juxtaposed with bands like Tool, Meshuggah, or Dream Theater, but at the time they would most certainly have fit the bill.

I wouldn't bring up musicianship when half of Kirk's solos are the epitome of Frehley like pentatonic wankery drenched in way too much wahwah. As much as I love metallica, Kirk has been the weakest link for a long time. Dime>>>Kirk
