I don't expect anyone to bite the head off a bat. Ever.
On stage antics are not the same as creating interesting music.

Take a band like Sleater-Kinney (who have been around as long as the FF). They put out an album last year that, while still sounding like S-K, experimented with different effects and had this dance-pop-punk vibe. It sounds different from the other albums in their discography.

Even bands that haven't changed their sound all that much like Dinosaur Jr. still seem to sound fresh and crunchy. They have grit and great song writing.

When I throw on a FF record, I just hear a bland, boring, safe band. On top of that, the song writing isn't even that great.

I know this is just my opinion. But I think a lot of others feel the same way.

I mean if all you like is Smells Like Teen Spirit, I don't know what to tell you. Most Nirvana fans I know wouldn't even have that in their top 5. There are also no covers in my top 5.

It was an example of angst and youth that I was going for. RATM was a better reference.

If you are taking the discussion in this direction, you lose me. Not saying its good or bad. As you said its just an opinion. But when 40+ year old musicians start going with a dance pop punk vibe?? It loses me. And at times seems like trying too hard. "Forcing" a different sound. But again, "opinion". Yours and mine are gonna differ.

I'm not even trying to say Foo Fighters are "great". I think they are good/ok, but thats about it. Grohl is just polarizing for some. He's so vocal and so out there. Always talking. At SXSW and his own HBO Docu-Series. That it pisses people off if they dont like him.

Well, if you like anything more, then I don't know what to tell you. I could go the rest of my life without hearing any of the rest.

Whole lot of butthurt from folks who can't sniff Grohl's jock musically. And they dare call him pretentious as they try to look down their noses at him.

I agree 100%

You have to be pretty damn shallow to not care for a certain type of music if you know the artist's age exceeds some arbitrary number. For instance, let's say you hear a song and determine that you like it, and aren't aware that it is SK, but as soon as you find out who it is and the artist's age, you immediately change your opinion? That is just silly. If you like what you hear, who cares about anything else?

When I read this thread earlier this morning I did not expect to see this many people supporting the Foo Fighters. Honestly thought they were just a running joke like Nickelback or The Disco Biscuits.

You want a joke band, try Widespread Panic or Phish, or other stupid jam bands that just repeat the same trash over and over again. I guess if you're really, really high you can enjoy it.

I'm not saying the FF have to go for THIS sound. But why would this lose you? I just don't understand what age has to do with experimenting. Bowie just put out an art/jazz rock album. A few years ago, the Flaming Lips put out a completely different sounding record than their others. Guys like Byrne and Eno are always trying new things.

I think people are put off by him because he wants you to know he's a rock star so bad. He's on this Rock Star 101 thing and I find it pretty grating.

That would be awesome. Radiohead actually possess creativity and imagination and have been/are willing to experiment with different sounds/genres.

Radiohead has some good songs, but otherwise they are pretty blah.

Who?

Just because you're the only one who has heard of them doesn't make them great, but if it makes you feel special ...

eta: I regret accidentally clicking on this board. I had forgotten how bad it was. Even the Soccer Board seems good by comparison. Later bitches!

I find it hard to believe anyone who seriously pays attention to music doesn't know or at least recognize the name of this band.

Good riddance to the guy making fun of someone for mentioning one of the most well known punk bands of the last 20 years, and then claiming that most people haven't heard of them!

Right?

I mean take a look at the reception of their album last year in all these different publications: LINK

But people who like music wouldn't possibly know them..

I'm surprised this was the comment that triggered y'all and not my calling out WP and Phish.

We are "triggered", yet you throw a fit and bitch about how crappy this board is, claim that you are done with it, then continue to post.

You are entitled to your opinion about WP and Phish, but I don't see how that adds any substance to this thread.

The guy is white knighting for the foo fighters. He obviously hasn't exposed himself to much music.
