Props to the Varsity for using that place other than just for shows. If i still lived in BR i would definitely go watch soccer games there. It's a great bar as well as a venue, why would you not use it??

And also, Bowen's little finger knows more about the ins and outs of the music industry than every poster on this board combined. He's been doing this shite for a long time, it's the reason the Varsity hired him...

Do they still do the "Retro-Active" party on Saturday nights? I remember seeing that in event section of the newspaper for like 20 years.

I hope that finally died

t's just sad that a city this size really only has The Varsity with nobody else in town to compete with them.

that's laughable. Manship and the Moon do just fine.
And the smaller venues have interesting calendars as well.

Maybe he's referring to the size of the venue?

Manship is extremely overrated. Their theatre is just awful. Whoever designed that completely dropped the ball.

This. I'm moreso referring to the size of the place. Nobody else can compete.

They'll have like two shows I'm interested in a year on average

Have to disagree there. Every seat is a great view and the acoustics are fantastic

you're one of the few who I can appreciate on this board but I disagree. ive been to numerous shows there and find it to be lacking. i'll say the seats are good but I cant agree on the acoustics. they aren't terrible but they could be better. I also think that for a theatre like that, they could've done a little better on the visual/presentation side of things. its very "cold" and bare for a stage in a theatre.

I do agree with that. About the presentation. I guess I've always sat in a good section there though.

He books for the varsity, he books for hangout, he manages Earphunk as well as other bands and the varsity is pretty much printing money right now.

Like it or not the dude is successful as hell.

I'm not a huge fan of the varsity. Its not a particularly good venue and I don't really like a lot of the bands Bowen pulls into there but the fact remains that you couldn't do his job and you truly are clueless if you think you could.

The Varsity decided a long time ago (90s) that they were in it for the money and not the music (all started with the original DIsco Retro and snowballed from there)... All the people that have booked since, have been somewhat hamstrung by that...

Add that with the fact that BR is neither a great music town, audience wise or destination wise... and you get what you currently have at The Varsity... Just be thankful if they get a band you like every once in a while...

Duh, Doc...

Money vs Music... pick the music venue you want in your town...

edit: I will add that if BR ever proved a venue that size could make money booking good bands people would show up to... I'm sure things may have been different.. or maybe not, its gotta be easy to book utter dross and collect a paycheck...

It's making money and booking good bands.

They shy away from bands that draw 20 people that play at circle bar. I like a lot of those bands too. But they don't play big venues for several a reasons

What's utter dross there?

Yes, there will be tribute and cover bands, but there will also be arctic monkeys, turnpike troubadours, American aquarium, deftones, etc.

They have to be wide open and appeal to a large demo.

Not the niche market.
