Johnny Cash.

And after seeing him again tonight...Garth Brooks needs heavy consideration.

No.

He's an incredible live performer, but not in that conversation.

My vote is for either Willie or Jones.

7 albums that are each 10x platinum most definitely puts him in the conversation.

...popularity doesn't always equate with quality, after-all you might be Belieber as well.

Haggard is one of my favorites, but I think you have to give that title to George Stait.

For that era of singers I would rank Waylon as the best followed by Cash and Merle.

This argument is so tired. And often, it's just being contrary.

At some point you have to admit that commercial success means the artist is doing SOMETHING right. And it's not necessarily just marketing themselves.

You have to take it in a case-by-case basis. Garth Brooks puts out good stuff. Enough good stuff to merit being in the conversation.

Waylon Jennings definitely belongs in the conversation.

It's a guy named George. Pick one.

If counting singer songwriter its Jones. But Strait is the better singer. And not a drunk and at times train wreck of a human being.

Haggard would be one of the top 3 or 4.

Garth Brooks shouldn't even be mentioned on the same page as Haggard, Jones, Jennings, Cash, etc. adding pedal steel to pop rock does not make it country music, the same can be said about any of the other Justin Beibers of countrified pop music.
