I like a good bit of his music, but I think what Garth accomplished back in the day really set the tempo for a lot of the pop country that's come since.

You add perhaps the most under appreciated country singer IMHO--Don Williams.

Great add. Lefty was Merle before Merle.

Hank Williams

He would be the greatest of all time on the strength of "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" alone. He wasn't accurate of pitch nor did he possess great, proper technique but that's not what Country Music is about in the first place. Hank sang with genuine attitude, singular creativity and style, and for reaching the listener with greatest effect, he simply has no peer.

2. Waylon Jennings
3. Merle Haggard
4. Johnny Cash
5. George Jones

Lefty was Merle Haggard's favorite singer. Hank was a fan Lefty's singing and put him on his tour when he was starting out. I'd almost make him and Willie Nelson interchangeable with any from 2-5 on my personal "greatest's". As an "influence" Lefty Frizell is one of the 3-4 architects of country music for sure. Incredible Country musician.

His songs are 2.5 minutes of raw emotion. You can feel the mans pain and sorrow. I've heard few things in life that can match the power of his songs. They're haunting.

As country music is concerned
George strait
George jones
Cash
Merle
Hank Sr

Artists who cross/blur the lines of different genres
Hank jr
Conway Twitty
Elvis
Jerry Lee Lewis
Mickey gilley

As far as women go. Definately Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Tanya tucker and Emmy Lou Harris, Reba. I'm sure I'm missing a few

These are in no particular order by the way

... What sets Merle apart for me is huge library of songs and his instrumental abilities. He played lead guitar on a lot of his songs. The Strangers were band of the year several years.

The guitar solos on Working Man Blues...

solos by James Burton.... even Jerry Reed did 'Okie From Muskogee'.

This argument is so tired. And often, it's just being contrary...

...Garth Brooks puts out good stuff. Enough good stuff to merit being in the conversation.

Dude,
Even Vito Corleone
couldn't make Garth Brooks d'GOAT country singer. You do realize how long they've been singing the stuff?

When I think of the perfect country voice, I think of George Jones.
