Guitar players: what's your restring routine?

How often? What strings? Do you use any sort of cleaner?

Sadly, I feel like old dead strings are something that holds me back from playing. It always takes me at least 30 minutes to do and that is with minimal care (wipe down with paper towel and remove any residue buildup).

Looking for a better routine and maybe some tips to knock it out more quickly.

Peg winders make a lot of difference. I also used to use scissors or pliers to trim the string ends but I thanked myself for getting some proper wire cutters.

Also, I have always had trouble staying with the habit of washing my hands just before playing. That definitely helps prolong your string life.

don't want to start a new thread, so I'll ask here.

any advice on lower the strings on my stratocaster.
it's sky high compared to my Les Paul.

i've never done this myself and don't want to make things worse.

Two words: set up.

Probably needs a truss rod adjustment or at worst, shims at the neck joint. A luthier or guitar repair tech can usually work it out with a thorough set up.

I think this is something everyone should learn to do himself. Before you go screwing with a truss rod, adjust the saddles. Strats have individually adjustable saddles, which means you can raise or lower each one.
LINK

The two holes in each saddle's top are for a tiny hex wrench. Start by slightly tightening those bolts, which will draw your saddles into the body and lower the action. Go slowly - a little goes a long way. Then try playing each string at a bunch of spots on the neck to see if you get fret buzz. If you do, it's too low. Generally the middle saddles will be slightly higher and slope downward to match the radius of the fretboard (more curved on a Fender, less so on a flat neck Ibanez type). If you can't adjust adequately by futzing with the saddles you'll need to address the truss rod.

Two things that I use after every time I play are GHS Fast Fret and a Tonegear String Cleaner They have greatly improved string life for me as for as strings rusting. I have oily hands and sweat a decent amount when I play, especially live.

As far as changing strings, that just comes with practice. A winder helps out a great deal as reducing time. One thing that I do on my Paul's is pull all the strings through the stop tail and pull them fairly taught and capo them at the 12th fret. I then pull one out from the capo at a time to feed it through the tuner. I find that cuts down on time too because you aren't searching for the next string one by one to feed through the stop tail, it's already done.

You'll need a small allen head wrench, (I think 1/32") to lower the string saddles. They should have a screw on either side of the saddle to adjust it up and down. You may need to adjust your intonation after adjusting your saddles though.

i guess i din't really word that question very well.

I know about the screws on the bridge.
i'm just not sure i want to go adjusting them myself and potentially make things worse than they are now and not be able to get them back to at least this level.

I'm just now learning (or attempting to learn) how to play.
I find my Les Paul is much easier to finger a good clean chord.
the main difference i'm seeing between the two is that there is a noticeable difference in string height, and am assuming that is one of the reasons.

example: if you slide my pick between the strings and the 3rd fret (fret itself, not the space), it rubs the strings and fret on my Les Paul, but easily fits without touching either on my Strat.

Get a string action gauge, measure the current height and if things are worse you can put them back where they are now. A set of radius gauges would be helpful too. Or just get a setup kit: LINK

I use Fast Fret applicator after every time I play. It's only a few dollars and one applicator will not need to be replaced for years. It slicks the strings for better playing and lengthens the life of the strings significantly.

Get a string winder for sure. I love Fender super bullets in a strat. I can actually tell a big difference in resonance.

I like .09's on strats .10's on Les Pauls.

Wipe down your strings with a microfiber towel or paper towel when you are done playing. This helps prolong string life.

This drives me NUTS. The feel and sound especially the B and e string!!!!

Like nails on chalkboard or a fork on a metal cafeteria tray rack or a metal take on cement.

My teeth hurt just typing this.
