Oh looks-wise Cinderella were right there with the rest of them. I'm talking musically. "Hair metal" to me is defined by booming drums and the baroque-style pointy-guitar playing with the scooped mids. When they began to unlatch themselves from the clutches of Jon Bon Jovi, their guitar sound and songwriting was more akin to Keith Richards than Kip Winger.

At the rate this thread is going, apparently there were only about 2 "hair" bands in the 80's.
I was thinking that as I read this thread... I consider most of these hair bands, but I prob have a looser definition of the genre... For example, while Cinderella may have had more substance to their sound, they still willingly road that hype and toured with those bands and teased their hair and wore make up... they still tour with those bands at festivals today..
On another note, the other night while channel surfing late, I saw this wonderfully terrible documentary on Quiet Riot... Focused mainly on the drummer from the "classic" lineup... I couldn't change the channel..

I don't disagree and I see Shelter Me as an homage to the Stones and you can pick it up in a lot of those songs. Heartbreak Station was that typical 'hair" power ballad IMO.

Which ironically enough to me, Dead Man's Road sounds like Jon Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory. Maybe it had to do with both being with Mercury Records and releasing those albums about the same time.

Is this for real? Don't think I've ever heard or read this. Never in a million years should these bands ever be in the same sentence as a hair band.

Scorpions
No way. Who's saying such things? Plus, the guys in the band haven't had hair since about 1983.

I never could get into RATT. I tried. Just didn't happen for me.

You don't know what the frick you're talking about. Listen to Heartbreak Station. One of the bluesiest rock albums of the '90's. (Recorded in Bogalusa, for a little trivia.)
Long Cold Winter was a great album as well.

Nobody on the board, but the people I've met irl who really like Scorpions are into all the hair bands and tend to lump them in there. They're a better fit for the NWOBHM if you ask me.
Metallica and Iron Maiden don't belong anywhere near this conversation. Metallica's whole shtick when they were young was all anti-glam.
I think it was Mustaine who coined:
Gay
L.
A.
Metal

I was hammered when I wrote that. I was just trying to come up with something.

That crossed my mind when I first read it lol

Seem to be the only non hair bands in this thread. To me, anyway.

I saw Cinderella open for Judas Priest in 88 and they put on a hell of a good show. I actually enjoyed their set more than Priest's in some ways. I had dismissed them as just another shite hair band before that but they gained much respect that night.
Ratt's Out Of The Cellar album has some pretty cool songs on it. Back For More, Lack Of Communication, Wanted Man. The rest of their stuff is kinda lame.

King Diamond was from the 80's but he was way beyond what the hair bands were doing, and in fact, has survived until today doing albums under King Diamond & Mercyful Fate.

Some more Heartbreak Station trivia. John Paul Jones did string arrangements on that album including the title track.

Tesla was not a hair band. Tesla is the most underrated band in the history of music. Cinderella looked like a hair band but their music was not hairbandish. Very bluesy. Never liked Skid Row but not hair band. Others?
Tesla is very underrated, one of my favorite bands.

Ha, I was thinking exactly the same thing (expecting someone to claim that Motley Crue was not a hair band, either).
It does not really bother me whether an artist is or is not a "hair band". If I like its music, then labels be damned. There's no need to feel self-conscious about liking the "hair band" music of Cinderella, Tesla, et al.
