LYLE LOVETT

Residing just outside of Houston proper, Lyle Lovett calls Klein home. Born and raised in the Bayou City, where his parents worked for Humble Oil Co. (later Exxon), Lovett has traveled far and wide but still chooses to live near his old stomping grounds. His kin have resided in the Klein area since the 1840s, and many extended family members still live there, which keeps the four-time Grammy Award winning singer and actor nearby

GEORGE STRAIT

King George was born a stone's throw south of San Antonio, and the Lone Star State is proud to remain his home base. The Grammy-winning Country Music Hall of Famer's twangy charm has endured for nearly 35 years, and even his latest release, Love is Everything, displays continued appeal. This cowboy may have hung up his touring boots, but if he ever decides to put them back on, local fans won't have to wait long for him to visit Houston.

Van Cliburn. ....born in shreveport but moved to Texas at 6 yrs old.

quote:

The first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 was an event designed to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority during the Cold War, on the heels of that country's technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957. Cliburn's performance at the competition finale of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 on April 13 earned him a standing ovation lasting eight minutes.[2][10] When it was time to announce a winner, the judges were obliged to ask permission of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to give first prize to an American. "Is he the best?" Khrushchev asked. "Then give him the prize!"[2][11] Cliburn returned home to a ticker-tape parade in New York City, the only time the honor has been accorded a classical musician. His cover story in Time magazine proclaimed him "The Texan Who Conquered Russia".[12]

Great mention. And it looks like he's still at the top of game. LINK

Agree, in addition to a few previously mentioned.

Many years ago on a business trip, we were playing golf at a club, Dominion in San Antonio. Not many people on the course and we were playing fast. We came up to the par 3 17th and who was waiting to tee off? Yep, George and a couple others. He invited us to join him and we gladly accepted. Damn good golfer.

Wow. Great list.

Not one of the best, but should be mentioned .. the Big Bopper.

And Marcia Ball I think now hails from Beaumont?

Kudos to:

ZZ Top
Buddy Holly and his bass player ... Waylon Jennings
SRV
Johnny Winter, w/ a mention of Edgar.

Interesting thread, to me a "Texas Musician" is something completely different from a musician from Texas.

Fair point. Many of the artists listed are more rock & roll than they are "Texas country".

How about :

Walt Wilkins
Stoney Larue
Davin James
Wade Bowen
Max Stalling
Zane Williams
Tommy Alverson
Pat Greene
Corey Morrow
Jack Ingram

Has anyone mentioned Bob Wills? Maybe I missed it.

Bob Wills was the first to put Texas on the music map.
