Albert Porter in Houston is the importer for Allnic Audio. He has more vinyl than imaginable. It is good stuff, and crazy expensive. Those amps, pre, DAC, and phono stage are probably around $125k.

The table looks to be a custom plinth with a Technics SP-10 Mk.3 with SME 312 tonearms...probably about $40k for that.

The speakers are around $85k.

So around $250k+ for the entire rig, depending on cabling and accessories.

We sessioned them with Albert. He's a cool guy. He drove to my friend's house to make sure everything was fine with the amps. Allnic custom wound the transformers for my friend's input voltage (~125V), and Albert was on the phone with guy in Korea to give him feedback on the condition of them post shipping. We opened both the M5000s up and inspected them, fiddled with the delay circuitry a bit on one.

Hopefully Albert can get some clients in NOLA, could meet up for dinner when he's down. Love to make it to Dallas to hear his field coils, just his speakers are ~$225k (retail, which I'm sure he doesn't pay...still). Drives them with these same amps.

Apparently the motor controller on the turntable is a modern bit of circuitry that's a somewhat tricky, but it's serviced in the US so that makes it easy.

Last I saw, Albert was using the bigger (much) version of what I currently use--The Focal Grand Utopia EM. They are, IMO, the finest loudspeaker made. They will sing on as little as 50 watts, and absolutely shine with 150 watts of power. It is the most balanced, detailed, and smoothest speaker I've heard.

I plan on moving to the speaker just under the Grand Utopia in the not too distant future--the Stella Utopia. The jump from the Stella Utopia to the Grand Utopia, however, is $100k!!

The Grand is a BIG speaker--in the neighborhood of 575 lbs. each!!...The Stella is around 350 lbs. each.

Albert also has this thing online where he will find any CD or album for you. If you say it is impossible to find an out of print CD, he will find a way to locate it for you. He always comes through. I have seen people amazed that he will actually hunt their hard to find music down and get it for them.

This picture should give you an idea of their size (hooked up to Tenor Audio amps and pre--which are also quite large)...

Yup, he showed me pictures of his black Focals...I think he said the M5000s are easily pushing 400 watts/ch. Unreal how effortlessly they were driving the Dynaudios. Can't imagine how intense the bottom is on the those Focals, Albert said they reach down into the single digit frequencies.

Sweet...

Well I’ll definitely get in on it. I’m gonna start paying $100 for some vinyl I guess I’ll need to upgrade my cart from the red to the blue at a minimum.

I remember you saying something about the Hana carts and I think maybe davidlsu was the poster who got one put on from MusicDirect and he seems to enjoy it.

Haven’t scrolled back through, but I think there was something with maybe the pre in the nomad may or may not allow one (Hana) to be added... or maybe it was the high output vs low cart..

So I got the green light to upgrade my turntable if I wanted to spend 1500-2k What should I look for and would my Hana cart be good to stick with for a while?

If I were gonna spend that right now, I would seriously consider the VPI Scout - check out Music Direct - they have it on for $1695 right now.

That’s a pretty badass table.... I’d bet that Hana would do well with that setup... could always upgrade the cart at a later date.

That being said... the prime scout is sitting just above that at $2200. It was one of sterophile’s products of the year.

Marco... got on a vpi page and Mat Weisfeld said to just get the 2m black replacement stylus. He said they had done it and it sounded great. Plus it’s an easy change. It’s not quite as good if you were to change out the whole cart, but he recommended doing it like that.
Read on ortofon’s site that the red/blue bodies are different than the black/bronze bodies. They will completely interchange, but you lose some of the qualities of the cart by doing it. I asked Mat specifically and he said they say it on the site, but it would be a huge upgrade from the red.

I see the black is a Shibata and the bronze isn’t. They say the black is very revealing, almost to a fault.

What you think?

So this past weekend we had some family in from out of town for a visit. The group included my four sweet little nieces, ranging in age from 3 to 8. Well, un-beknownst to me, the five year old decided to play DJ with my Rega Planar 3/Rega Exact cartridge.

Earlier in the afternoon Friday, I had been fooling around with the settings on my preamp (Schiit Mani), and got pulled away. Well, I left an LP on the platter (Disc 1, Side one of the Best of Eva Cassidy), and the dust cover off - I normally don't leave the dustcover on, but had planned to put it on for the weekend to discourage little hands. My bad!

Well, the sweet little 5 year old found her way into that room, and from the looks of the record, tried to draw on it with the tonearm. Her dad (my brother-in-law) discovered and promptly brought it to my attention and told me he had already ordered a new copy of the LP and was having it sent to me, stand-up guy. Well, later I go to more closely inspect the damage, and drop the needle on that LP to survey the damage. Immediately, I can tell something is bad wrong. Long story a bit shorter, her DJ session ripped the stylus off of the cantilever. Damn, $600 cartridge down the drain (luckily for me I didn't pay that, or the pain of this episode would have been much greater).

So, I had several cartridges on my want list including Hana E, Dynavector 10x5, Ortofon 2M Black or Bronze or perhaps replace the Rega Exact. Well, I couldn't or wouldn't make up my mind and pull the trigger, so for (nearly) immediate gratification, I ordered a Nagaoka MP-110 for USD126 via Amazon Prime. Well, I got it this evening, put it on, aligned it, cranked it up, and will say I am awfully impressed. Can't believe how nice it sounds for under $150. So now I am afforded with the luxury of time to read and obsess on what my permanent replacement is going to be, but at first blush, I am going to say this little gem compares very favorable to the Rega Exact which liked a whole lot.

I did almost that exact same thing to my dad's turntable when I was about 5---I took around 10 LPs off the shelf and played "scrub the floor" with them!...he forbade me from touching his stuff again until I was like 28 or something.

Which is why I started at a young age with my own gear.

Glad to hear you are still at it and building up a nice rig..I've been meaning to drop you a line and see how the process is going.

I have a Nagaoka MP-200. Great cartridge. I used it on my Rega RP-6 for a while. Now it is on a Yamaha TT and it sounds fantastic. I'm using a Denon Dl-110 on the Rega right now and it is a great match.

What preamp are you using and do you use MM settings since that's a high-output MC cartridge?
