You're Joking right?
Tom was Vito's adopted son. He was arguably the most loyal to the family out of all of them. He was the only one who really had the family's best interest at heart.
Sure, he may have listened to another offer, but who wouldn't? It just means he was awesome at his role. And he only got approached when the family was in the thick of its biggest turmoil...so in other words he passed the biggest loyalty test you could go through.
Sure he was no saint, and he had a side piece, but so did sonny and nobody questioned his loyalty

Michael had two options with Fredo.
Option A: Kill him
Option B: Give him about 200k and a airway coupon to anywhere he wants to go.
Option B probably sees him show back up after a few years needing more money or as ransom from a rival family.
Option A was really the only option.

The most useless character by far was tom hagale and the biggest threat because he was not really family. They really should have taken him fishing instead of fredo. He could have brought the whole thing down.
Stupidest comment about The Godfather movies that I've ever read here.

Fredo had to die. He was controlled by his vices and his insecurities.
I would have killed him immediately. No way I would have waited because he was a danger to have around.
Had Fredo been around in GFIII he would have once again been a puppet to use against the family.

There was never alot of backstory or explanation about why everyone in the family had no respect for him. Only explanation provided was he was sickly.
in the books he ends up being bisexual and an alcoholic which is used by rivals to try and discredit Micheal. It also doesnt help his case that he cant control his drunk arse wife.
He also wants to start a cemetery business that Micheal rejects. This rejection and the promise by rivals to help him get it started is how he is manipulated into feeding sensitive information that is used in Micheal's assassination attempt.

Yes. Hobbits are so annoying.

The ultimate knife-twist is that flashback scene at the end of Part II when it shows Fredo as the only one who shakes Michael's hand and supports his decision to join the army.
Probably my favorite scene in all three movies.

First thing Michael does is get rid of Tom. Apparently no one understood the significance of that.

He did not "get rid" of Tom. Tom was demoted because he was not a war time consigliere. He not sicilian.
Tom was still the family's lawyer, and was running the family as temp boss when Michael had to focus on finding the rat / dealing with Roth.

Most surprising for sure. I would have been really mad if Michael Had killed Tom. Tom had value. He was intelligent, resourceful and very loyal.
Fredo was worthless. Who cares why he's weak. I didn't need any more proof that he was weak than the fact that he let Moe Greene treat him the way he did. Made it look like anyone in the family could be treated badly by a gangster from another family. Shouldn't have been tolerated, especially from a Vegas hood like Moe who'd gone kind of "Hollywood".

But the point was made in the closing scene where Michael announces he joined the Marines. It showed Pop was all about family and the business was used to protect the family. Michael reversed it and it all became about the business and the family was second to it. Hence, Michael is now alone.

I think Michael should have sent Fredo far away on permanent exile. Let him go fishing every day under guard.
btw, if I was the guy that executed Fredo, I would be very uncomfortable. Michael might become so remorseful that he might want to wipe out any reminders of what he did.

The authorized prequel written by another novelist-can't think of the title or the author's name-delves into Fredo's background. He's destined for the priesthood until he's molested by a priest, and his dysfunctional personality stems from that. In the books, Fredo is also not nearly as inept a character as he is in the movies. He is legitimately a threat to Michael, at least potentially.

In the final book he gets elected to Congress, so he's ultimately the one who goes legit. Although he only serves one term before he's defeated, then dies of cancer.
ETA: this is the prequel I referred to in the other post. Now that I think of it, it's not a prequel. It jumps around in the narrative, from before the beginning to after the end, filling in a lot of plot holes and backstory.

And it sounds kind of dumb. How stupid would somebody be, even a priest, to molest or do any harm to a child of Vito Corleone. I reject this book on that assertion alone. What happened to Fredo there is not believable.

The guy who executed Fredo was Al Neri, who was Michael's bodyguard and main assassin. He was a former cop and appeared in all three Godfather movies. The movie doesn't go into his backstory, but in the books he's a pretty bad dude, since it was nearly impossible for former cops to be made men. He was still Michael's right hand man in TGIII.

Pacino's performance in Part II is the greatest acting I've ever seen. Absolutely incredible.
