We could do it however, but with the Fringe thread, it worked pretty well to have weekly "assignments" of three episodes, updated every Monday morning. So for example, one Monday morning, I'd update the OP with the new episodes to watch for the week, and we would begin discussion on the previous episodes from the previous week.
Choosing a particular day would be tough to work out between everyone involved. So it works best on a week by week basis IMO. Plus, that gives everyone ample time to watch the episodes and be ready to discuss them starting Monday morning.

CURRENT DISCUSSION
Episode discussion begins on ~page 56 for the following episodes:
Episode 5: "An Origin Story" - The science team goes on the offensive when Resistance Forces apprehend an Observer and the powerful portal creating device he had with him. Astrid solves a critical puzzle that may turn the advantage to the Resistance forces. Peter makes a pivotal choice when he learns of the advanced technology each Observer has implanted.
Episode 6: "Through the Looking Glass and What Walter Found There" - Walter sets-out on his own after uncovering another tape and steps into a pocket universe sandwiched in the membrane between parallel universes. Observers converge on Walter's position and only Peter has the skillset needed to rescue the science team.

So every week I updated the OP. "On the menu this week" is the assignment of episodes to watch for the week, and I would always update the date that discussion for those episodes would start (the following Monday). "CURRENT DISCUSSION" is what is being discussed that week (since I always updated on Monday mornings).
So in the above example, we discussed episodes 5 and 6 of season five that week, and episodes 7 and 8 were what we are supposed to watch during the week and be ready to discuss the following Monday.
And looking back, because S5 was shorter than the others, and because we wanted to slow it down a bit and we didn't want it to end, we ended up switching to two episodes per week instead of three for season five. But for S1-S4, we were going at a three-episodes-per-week clip.
And Fringe had the Fringepedia website, which was pretty helpful...it was a wiki-like page detailing the episodes and what happened (and with questions and theories and shite), so even if you missed an episode, or couldn't remember what all happened, the site could tell you and you could still discuss. Not sure whatever show we choose would have that, but it may.

Neither...it wasn't like that. You're focusing on watching the episodes live/together. This was a weekly thing. You just had one week to get all three episodes in on your own time. Discussion started Monday morning for that week's assignments.

Watching episodes live/together tends to generate VERY little discussion, and is usually simply relegated to reactions only (hence why most South Park threads are just laughing emoticons when the episode is actually airing...the other discussion doesn't normally come in until later).

I could be coaxed into a discussion group about The Sopranos, The Wire or The Shield.
I had decent luck with the first season of Star Trek, but we lost a bunch of folks and I was talking to myself by the end of the Season 2 thread - so we didn't finish it.
Boardwalk Empire just wrapped - I do mean to go back and finish it, I just lost momentum somewhere in the middle. It is intriguing enough.

No I agree with you for the most part. "Serious" shows definitely lend themselves to more/better discussion for sure.
IMO the main problem is time...most people don't want to invest that much time to something, especially when it's not at their own pace. The Fringe thread was up and regularly active for about nine months. That's a long time. The tripod (plus jamsmiley) stuck it out to the end, but I assume even if more people would've participated, they wouldn't have done it week to week like we did; it's just too much of a chore to dedicate that much time to watching a TV show for some people (and understandably so).

Firefly is GREAT. But it's too short for something like this. You can knock out Firefly in a couple weeks (or less) if you wanted to.

Let me say this - if you wanted to take a show like Seinfeld - and had a "Top 20" or "Top 30" episode discussion, laid out the schedule and watch order in advance - I think that might be doable. Seinfeld is on Hulu now, so it is fairly widely available.
And I disagree with you on the "inexplicably cancelled shows" - the most notable of which, for me, are Firefly and Freaks and Geeks - it would not be a thread that carried on for months and months - which would be its charm. Firely - 2 episodes per week - 2 months you would be done. Ditto for F&G.
Those shows are worth watching over and over.

i've never seen Battlestar Gallatica. We Would have to buy season Blue rays/dvd's i dont think its on netflix or amazon prime

Not Lost - just watched again about 6 months ago. Need to let it sit for awhile.
Battlestar, Smallville, Star Trek, maybe the X-Files, would be cool. Any sci-fi/fantasy stuff is cool.

While I would agree with you in principle, HBO is exclusive to Amazon Prime and HBOGo - so - it would be tough to do some of the best shows ever - particularly M/TV board favorites The Sopranos and The Wire.
