re: Why does Passengers get so much hate?

I was entertained by it as well, and think it shouldn't be rated as badly as it is. But there was definitely potential for it to be a much better movie. *Spoilers*...
I almost turned it off when I knew he was going to wake up JLaw because it was such a poor decision that I don't think he would have actually made based on his character. Even after a year of mostly isolation, I can't see him becoming selfish/crazy enough to do that. After I got over that part, I just stopped actually thinking about the movie and just watched it for its entertainment value, which made it more enjoyable.

Because it was frankly boring. I liked the premise.
They skipped over what made the idea interesting, the moral aspects of waking her up to add in that stupid arse storyline about saving the ship and then tried to make it ok by giving her a choice at the end. Totally fricked up an interesting concept.

if you glossed over the absurdity of all the fluff they added to the movie, the moral dilemma presented in the movie was quite interesting
but they had to completely frick it up with the ship slowly "dying", the convenience of the engineer waking up and dying at the right time, the utter absurdity of the end with Pratt living, etc

yeah this was another mistake
they should have made him be alone longer than just a year before he work her up

I didn't mind it at all to be honest. Somewhat entertaining sci fi flick. Not the best movie but not bad to watch with the wife. People being too overcritical, what's the point? Its a fricking movie.

I thought it was not as good as it could have been but much better than the reaction it got.

Things like the captain waking up at the exact moment they needed in order to save the ship.
It wasn't the captain. Andy Garcia was the captain.

There was no chance J-Law was going to stay mad at him and there was zero chance she'd never find out what Chris Pratt did.
I agree, but there was never an explanation of why the robot bartender told her?
I was hoping for a twist at the end, that it was some type of social experiment the company was doing or something cheesy like a reality show.

which was quite odd...to have someone like Garcia play a 10 second role with no lines
I guess its safe to assume he had more, but it was cut

Even odder that three of those ten seconds were included in the trailer.

. Out of all technological advancements on that ship and the builders never thought that might happen once?
It's pretty consistent with the confidence/arrogance of engineers. There are a lot of "brilliant" people who have no interest in fail-safes or backup plans.
Yep. Think re-telling of the Titanic.

I thought it was entertaining mostly because of the ship. Maybe one of the more interesting/realistic (can't think of word) portrayals of a space ship.

Jim told the barkeep "there are no secrets between us" before going to the bathroom.
That said, this movie sucks. Cliche after cliche after trope after tripe.
Only thing that could have saved it would have been unsimulated xxx masturbation scene for JLaw.

Because it would have been way better had it been written this way:

You have to wait, what, 30 years to even get a response to the call you sent out to the home base. And hell, you can't even into half of the ship, and you can't eat decent meals when you can see them on the menu (you can have cheerios but no eggs, forever).

And yet, there's a thousand or more people right there in front of you. I'd say most of us wouldn't make it a full year, and the majority would be good to make it a month before they woke someone else up.

Yeah that ham-handed effort to redeem him by giving her a choice had me rolling my eyes.

Nice, shows how different you can make a movie just by editing the existing footage. That idea mentioned near the end was exactly what my friend said while we were watching Pratt sacrifice himself. We knew long before this point that it was going to have the Hollywood ending, but my friend said that Pratt should die, and the ending would be Jennifer going through the same agonizing decision whether or not to wake someone else up.

He told the bartender that there were no secrets between them. So the bartender no longer had to keep the secret. Pretty basic machine logic.
I just watched it for the first time with my wife. If it had been marketed as a romantic drama with a sci-fi setting rather than a sci-fi thriller it would have gotten a better reception than it did I think. Pratt and J-Law had good chemistry, and the story was really about them. Not a perfect movie, but fun enough to watch with the mrs.

and Jennifer Lawrence is a smoke show.
People actually think this? She's actually borderline disgusting. How a moon-faced chick covered in disgusting moles is considered hot is beyond me. The only role she's tolerable in she's covered in blue paint so I'm not playing mental connect-the-dots the entire time she's on screen.
