I read they dropped 13 spots in the ratings when they switched Durwoods.

bad back. Really hurt his back falling off a horse filming a movie.

Close. It was while filming a scene on a handcar. From Wikipedia:

quote:

It was while filming the 1959 movie They Came to Cordura with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth that York would receive a permanently disabling back injury. In York's own words: "Gary Cooper and I were propelling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' men down [the] railroad track. I was on the bottom stroke of this sort of teeter-totter mechanism that made the handcar run. I was just lifting the handle up as the director yelled 'cut!' and one of the "wounded" cast members reached up and grabbed the handle. I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed—one hundred and eighty pounds or so. The muscles along the right side of my back tore. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, the addiction, the lost career."

quote:

Because of his back injury, which sometimes caused him to seize up in debilitating pain, the scripts for some of his later episodes on Bewitched were written around his being in bed or on the couch for the entire episode. York suffered little to no pain for the first two seasons, but after the third season, the pain worsened considerably, frequently causing shooting delays and York requiring assistance to walk around. In spite of his suffering, York maintained a professional presence on camera.

For a show that it seemed like was always on some channel int he early to mid 80's, I never really got into it. I'd watch it every now and then, but was much more into Leave It To Beaver, Brady Bunch, Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Andy Griffith. The other shows that were seemingly always on TV at the time.

Back surgery in the 1960's was extremely debilitating. My mother was in bed for half a year after hers. I can only imagine the torture that York endured.

Elizabeth Montgomery was so convincing in her character of "Serena the evil cousin", some of the crew actually hit on her (thinking she was a different actress). Then they realized they were trying to tag the star (and the boss' wife).

She really does look like Kidman there.

No wonder they picked Kidman for the recent film.

It was one of the best shows on TV back in the day/my day. Back then every family member knew when our favorite shows were coming on and gathered around the TV to watch them. Radio shows were still very popular also.

Darrin Stephens was obviously the original Don Draper.

There was a "McMahon and Tate" name-drop on Mad Men. There was also the episode where they mentioned that if Don went out to the West Coast they'd probably want to put him on an episode of Bewitched.

main reason I didn't like the show much. Even as a kid I'm thinking he was crazy for not letting her help out with things.
