I don't know, it's just a theory and according to some friends in psychology it was never brought up when they were in grad school. I think it fell out of favor. But it's clearly an influence on the show and gives a little bit of insight possibly into how Arnold or Ford coded the hosts. But as another poster has pointed out on other threads, we have "unreliable narrators." We don't even know if Ford is telling the truth about what Arnold wanted vs. what he wanted.

So much for all the warnings on Drudge that the series would be filled with all kinds of sex and would be going past the boundaries. It's been much more tame than GOT or The Wire.

I watched episode 3 earlier and Ford is explaining the bicameral mind to Bernard. He says that early humans basically mistook their inner voice/conscience as the voice of "God" and obeyed it. He said that it was a good way of understanding the evolution of the mind, but not a good way to achieve consciousness in reality. Arnold disagreed. So clearly Arnold coded his voice to act as that conscience/God voice in order to activate consciousness. Maybe it did work.
Also, Arnold's son did really die, if William is not the MIB then they edited it that way to trick us, and I'm 80% sure Thors brother is a host.
