If the choices are “pay out the nose to see it now” or “watch it on streaming you already pay for in a few weeks”, the hype behind the film going in usually determines the opening weekend.

A film with a lot of positive buzz going in tends to open well.

A film which doesn’t get released but instead escapes gets ignored.

Yeah. I think I'm agreeing with you. This film was going to bomb whether it was going to be on D+ or not.

There are flops, then there are “Worse than The Eternals” flops.

Should "The Marvels" be renamed "Heaven's Gape" due to its Historical floppage?

And the big bad in this movie? Looks to be yet another WOC with a shiny grill that's supposed to be Ronan the Accuser in drag or something.

Could be worse.

Could be a white man whose battle cry is, “For the Patriarchy!” as the villain.

Hollywood is completely out of ideas....don't give them any.

That movie is going to flop. The first one was mediocre and people are just burnt out on Marvel

Yeah. I don’t know if it will be good or not, but even if it’s one of the better made Mervel movies, I don’t think people are as into them anymore. I used to see every single one at the theater, but Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is the only one I’ve even seen in this new phase.

Nobody wants to watch this because it’s about a Muslim, black girl and Brie Larson

I don’t think the demographics would matter if it was a good movie.

Problem is people use these as shields against a bad product, so we might never see a good movie with the same kind of cast. The whole, “You only say my movie is bad because you’re racist/sexist” defense.

Maoyan's projecting a $4.2M opening day for THE MARVELS in China (thanks to Sophia Jane at BOT). CAPTAIN MARVEL's opening day was $34.3M.

Brie may be a good actress in other movies but you could have literally picked a random woman in New York and achieved the same results. I think the problem was that she was cast in Avengers with so many good actors that she seemed too wooden.

Also Captain marvel really wasn’t a terrible movie but when you are comparing every marvel movie to Endgame it just falls short. Everyone has marvel fatigue. It’s time for a 3 year break.

I really think it’s partly to blame that you need to watch so much material beforehand to know who these people are

I just saw The Marvels and don’t think this is true at all this time. There’s enough dialogue to give the details needed on Kamala and Monica without watching Ms. Marvel or WandaVision. Those shows give more context certainly, but it’s not necessary to watch this film. The original Captain Marvel is more important, though the key parts are explained well enough to keep up.

The main issues here are the pacing and the villain. At least they made her motive understandable. Still, it’s got a lot of heart and was a fun watch. The three leads have such charming chemistry together with cool fight scenes, so those were the major highlights.

The mid credits scene is an all timer as far as intrigue for obvious reasons.

A couple of YouTube reviewers are saying they can't believe it was allowed to be released in the state it's in. Sounds pretty bad

Just saw it on a whim. It wasn’t terrible. Better than The Eternals. Better than I thought it would be. It wasn’t the best ever, but it was pretty good.

It will be a flop because of low expectations and poor word of mouth. But, they humanized Brie Larson and she was much less irritating than in past Carol Danvers roles.

I’d give it a B for a Marvel movie.

To be fair, people use those "shields" against a good product too.

I'm not saying The Marvels is either/or considering I don't plan to watch it until it's on Disney+. All I'm saying is that, yes a certain faction of people will use the politics/race crutch to explain why a certain piece of content performed poorly, but lets not act like another faction of people will refuse to admit something is good because the content involves a different race or someone with different politics.
