well yes and no. if its a really visual hitech hollywood movie you can definitely tell and it pisses me off when it drops.
but for lots of the run-of-the-mill netflix tv shows in HD, you'd be surprised how often its dropped out of HD and you dont realize it.
eta this is by design. netflix is constantly squeezing more and more quality from thinner and thinner data streams.
THANKS COMCAST.

The internet is big enough and important enough to get its own line now. Of course that would cost billions and take decades to finish but its probably necessary in the long run.
There is in no way shape or form a need for fiber optics dedicated to internet only. Phone, TV, and internet are already proven to be able to go across copper and fiber is many times more powerful.
Fiber to the home is what needs to happen, but you won't see it from your AT&T's, Cox's, Comcast, etc. for a while especially when they have to worry about pleasing their investors too much to make the jump.

I have a VPN for torrenting, and it always boggles my mind that my streaming works better through the VPN despite the terminus being in the netherlands.

I'm sure the tw users are going to love the Comcast data caps.

yep. ridiculous isnt it? methinks comcast do protesteth too much that they are innocent little lambs who wouldn't dream of throttling netflix. its not like they were CONVICTED by the courts in 2008 of doing this exact thing huh? nope, not comcast.

I hope so. But I have comcast right now and I am not displeased.
As bad as the comcast customer service, its better than century link which was my previous ISP.

I don't know if anyone else said this...
I have Cox Internet. I have gone way over my allotted amount. They have never cut my internet.
I have their second to highest plan and pay 49.95 per month(including all fees and taxes). I have 1 computer hard wired, 2 laptops wireless, 4 Roku boxes wireless, PS4 & Xbox One wireless, an ipad wireless, 2 iphones wireless, and 1 desktop wireless. My and my family stream the crap out of games, movies, and everything else you can think of.

metering is coming. just because they haven't started charging or throttling you when you go over doesn't mean they wont soon. they're letting you get 'used to the idea' first.

as do i, but at night when my son's alienware is shut off, my daughter isnt watching youtube on her ipad and my wife isn't browsing pinterest, netflix still runs like a pig sometimes.
the fast 'speedtest' is bullshite because it presents a simple file download/upload and the ISPs know it..they make sure that simple operation is always smooth and returns a great result.

I was just responding to the poster about the Cox Rep telling him if he goes over they will cut his internet. I have been going over for years and they have never cut mine. They may start throttling, but I haven't seen once where they have just cut the cable off for it. There may be someone that had this happen, but I don't know of anyone. I use Netflix mainly for the kids. I just hook my laptop to my tv and watch any movie or show I want like that. I do think the current cable model should change. It is too easy to get everything you want from the internet.

Until more people start pulling away from cable and the networks start losing money. Right now they are not being affected but whenever people start to move towards streaming the internet for free and providers move to IP TV and just sell internet access pushing the cost of cable to the networks to figure out for themselves, prepare for the networks to put even more of a vice grip on the "free streaming" of their products that can be found on the web.

Google needs to just go ahead and take over the world. I'm tired of not being able to worship my future masters 24/7.

If things change for them like it's being pushed and proposed, then they may see a decline in the future. Could be another reason why they pulled back on the fiber to the home deal as well. Currently google doesn't have to pay for traffic being they are a search engine, but companies are pushing hard to get regulations changed to where they can't just reap the benifits of networks without being charged like everyone else.

You guys that go over the limit amaze me. I stream either netflix, prime, hulu or Deep Web just about every second I am up and I have yet to come close to my 200GB limit. I think maybe once I was close when I downloaded a few games and did my normal streaming.
Last time I checked the cox site just said something to the effect you might be contacted if you go over.
I'm sure at some point they will start pile driving the high usage players with extra fees. Actually surprised they haven't already done it.

Netflix sees slowdown amid clash with Internet service providers
Netflix sees slowdown amid clash with Internet service providers
quote:
Netflix has recorded a 14 percent drop in average speeds for its shows as it battles with Internet service providers over how it pays to transmit content to subscribers, the Wall Street Journal reported. The decrease in speed is particularly worse on Verizon Communications Inc.’s fiber-optic FiOS service and comes as Netflix releases the new season of its Emmy-winning series “House of Cards.” The center of the dispute is how much Netflix should pay Verizon to stream its data. As Americas stream more data-heavy online movies and TV shows, costs to the broadband providers go up.
Netflix doesn't want to pay extra fees to use broadband providers' networks, but Verizon, Comcast Corp. AT&T Inc. and Time Warner Cable Inc. are insisting on payment. The slowdown also comes after an appeals court ruled in favor of Verizon’s lawsuit over net neutrality rules, saying the Federal Communications Commission doesn’t have the authority to enforce current net neutrality standards that prevent Verizon from charging more to Netflix or other video streaming, data-heavy sites (read much more about that - and why all of Silicon Valley should care - here).

Comcast and Netflix announced a multiyear network-interconnection agreement, under which the Internet streaming company is paying for direct access to the cable operator’s network — promising better video quality for Comcast broadband subs.
The financial terms of the pact are not being disclosed. However, a source familiar with the arrangement confirmed a report by the Wall Street Journal that Netflix is paying Comcast.

I'm still really starting to hate comcast. They throttle netflix ( not anymore i guess) and hulu... they're not showing WWE PPVs anymore (a decision that is made DURING negotiations between NBC/Universal and WWE for their tv rights, and while WWE is looking for a new company to broadcast their television shows on.. bad business move IMO), they have constant outages (both cable and internet, sometimes for up to 12 hours), and the worst customer service ever. And on top of all of that, they bought the weather channel and made it a shell of the beacon of actual weather information it used to be...
