I use a Cisco WAP4410N. Small business router with QoS and 802.11 b/g/n

As I mentioned, every other service works fine.


ETA: That all said, I do believe there is a big possibility that Netflix needs to BUY MORE BANDWIDTH

I have AT&T DSL, not by choice, its all I can get. It is absolutely terrible. I pay for 6 mbps, at most I get 5. Typically, its around 3.5. Oddly enough, Netflix is probably the best service I am able to stream. Have the most problems with Amazon.

I canceled my TV with Cox today and the lady said that if I go over my allotted data (I made the mistake of telling her I get all of my entertainment from Netflix, etc.), my internet will be cut off and I will have to wait until the next billing cycle for it to turn back on. So I went and checked my bills and internet service descriptions. There is no mention of any kind of data limit, only speeds. If they shut off my internet for something that was not mentioned in their offer, I am going to fricking lose it.

Oh it's there, in paperwork you signed when you originally signed up.

There is so much hate for ISP's because there is a huge misconception that the web is free. Millions of dollars of equipment, cables, and maintanence go into these services.

People have to get paid for what they provide and companies such as Netflix have to pay for the bandwidth they use. They have to negotiate speeds and rates with these companies and it's not always on ISP being the problem. Same with HBOGo only being on certain providers, HBO wants certain speeds and bandwidth and want to name their price and providers are not agreeing to their strong arming.

This is way more complex behind the scenes than what Netflix is portraying with this information which to most people looks like it's all the ISP's fault.

It sounds like they aren't evolving their business effectively.

They also create monopolies and force outdated modes of content consumption all while charging huge amounts for Cable.

None of this crap. Without the content, no one has a use for the internet. So the fact that I pay $100 a month is predicated on the idea that I'm going after that content.

It isn't the cable companies fault in total, but it is their fault in being so rigid and opposed to change.

yup.

i'm part of the 'lucky ones' in nashville where comcast is piloting a metering system that charges if you go over a certain amount of usage.

they send out paper letters and i was going WAY WAY over which is bullshite because my habits are due to 12+ years with the same internet service having absolutely NO IDEA how much i was using and so while i have found ways to reduce my total usage per month, it SUCKS.

its like they waited until everyone was good & used to large amounts of data transfer and then spring the trap.

you'll see this in BR soon. i think the actual text was 'you get another 10gb free then $10 for each GB over that until the next month'

Your agreement most likely references the "Terms & Conditions" on their website.

i miss the days of docsis v1.0 uncapped modems.

anyone ever do this? when comcast first came to nashville i had a little utlity that would flash the firmware and 'uncap' my modem and give me OUTRAGEOUS speeds. like truly insane.

it was only a few months before they started banning people for life for doing this so i quickly put it back.

its all a game. there's a shiton of bandwidth out there that is being constrained artificially to give the impression of a precious commodity.

the new 'data usage meter' is more bullshite on top of bullshite. now they want to make YOU feel guilty at all that crazy amounts of data you're using so you'll feel compelled to upgrade to a more 'premium' plan.

they didn't expect people to have so much fun on the internet instead of cable tv

That's what the lady was trying to do.

I think I fricked up by telling her that I was cancelling cable because I get everything I need from the internet. I have consistently gotten the "you've gone over your data plan" emails but no action has been taken. I think action will be taken now that I don't pay for TV.

ETA: However, when I first started getting the emails, I called Cox and the guy said that they don't do anything for going over. So we'll see.

just waiting until you get accustomed to the idea first. i bet 90% of the people using this go over that bullshite cap. they know its a new revenue streatm..indirectly they're getting a 'subscription fee' for netflix by charging you by the data you use in a month.

So looking at all the counties listed, over half of the ISPs in the USA are in competition for some of the slowest internet speeds in the world.

Comcast deserves everything that's coming to them. It's probably the most despised company in America. Their approval ratings are literally lower than the IRS. That's how much they fricking suck.

I have received about 6 of those letters about going over. I just ignore them and nothing has happened yet. I've never gone more than 20 gbs over. If they try to turn it off I'll just threaten to cancel cable. I don't think it's worth it to them losing about $100 a month to gain $10.
